Description

No. 893,518. PATENTED JULY 14, l1908.
W. F. KELLER.
CLOTH MARKER.
v APPLICATION FILED sEPT.2e,1eo7.
WF/fezzf Wi h1 @ons WEBSTER FELS KELLER, OF CINCINNATI, OHIO.
CLOTH-MARKER.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented July 14, 1908.
Application filed September 26, 1907. Serial No. 394,731.
To all whom it may concern:
j formed upon the wings of the spring clasp D,
Be it known that I, VEBSTER F. KLLER, and thisspring clasp D is connected with ana citizen of the United States, residing in Oinl other spring clasp E, somewhat larger than cinnati, in thecounty of Hamilton and State of Ohio, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Oloth-Markers, of which the following is a specification.
This invention is a new and useful construction of cloth marker, the object being to provide an exceedingly cheap, simple and efficient form of device by means of which cloth can be marked in a regular manner, said device being particularly intended for use where it is desired to cut cloth into strips and in which the marking of the cloth is a necessary preliminary operation.
Another object of the invention is to provide a marking device which can be quickly and easily adjusted so as to measure oif a mark any desired width.
Vith these various objects inview, my invention consists broadly in the employment of a strip provided with wheels or rollers at each end, said strip having an adjustable chalk holding device connected thereto.
The invention consists also in the employment of a graduated strip and also of the novel construction of chalk-holding device.
The invention consists also in certain details of construction, hereinafter fully described and pointed out in the claims.
In the drawing forming a part of this specificationz-Figure l is an end view of a cloth marker constructed in accordance with my invention. Fig. 2 is a top plan view of the same. Fig. 3 is a detail sectional view showing the manner of connecting chalk holding device to the graduated strip, and Fig. 4 is a detail view of the chalk-holder.
In carrying out my invention I employ a graduated strip A which is preferably graduated in inches and fractions thereof and this strip may be any length desired, and also of any suitable material. A wheel or roller B is mounted at each end of the strip A, and a handle O is connected to this strip for the purpose of easilypushing the marker along the cloth. The strip A is grooved longitudinally adjacent its front edge upon its top and bottom faces as shown at A', said grooves being adapted to receive the rib portions D the clasp D and having its wings formed with barbs E in order to securely hold a piece of tailors chalk F between the wings or jaws of the clasp E. This clasp E is arranged vertically as shown whereas the clasp D is arranged horizontally, and in practice I prefer to construct this compound clasp with one common member, but it will of course be understood that any other equivalent construction may be employed.
The strip A is graduated and the top mem- 'ber of the clasp D is formed with a projecting pointer-finger D2 which will clearly indicate the relative position of the chalk with reference to the ends of the strip.
In operation the chalk-,holder is adjusted at the desired point and in the drawing I have shown this holder adjusted to mark a line two inches from the end of the strip, and the marker is then placed upon the cloth with the wheel at the end upon the eXtreme edge of the cloth, and the device is then pushed forwardly maintaining the wheel always at the edge of the cloth, and in this manner a mark will be produced which will be parallel at all points with the edge of the cloth. In case a number of'marks are desired before the cloth is cut, the marker can be arranged so that the wheel will travel along the line prevliously made instead of along the edge of the c oth.
It will thus be seen that I provide a simple and eflicient construction of cloth marker, capable of carrying out all the objects hereinbefore referred to.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
l. A cloth marker comprising a graduated strip provided with wheels at each end, and a two-part clas one part being connected to the graduatedpstrip and the other part adapted to receive and hold a piece of chalk.
2. A cloth marker comprising a grooved strip having a handle connected thereto and provided with wheels at each end, a horizontal clasp having. ribs upon its members adapted to engage the grooves of the strip,
Q e v 893,518
and avertioal claspoonnected to the horizonl an indicating pointer, the other part of the tal clasp having its members provided With clasp having its members provided with 10 barbs Jfor the purpose specified. barbs for the purpose of holding a piece of 3. A cloth marker comprising a grooved chalk, as set forth. 5 and graduated strip provided with a handle VEBSTER FELS KELLER.
and having Wheels at each end a two-part Witnesses: clasp, one part thereof being horizontal and MEDARD C. KELLER,
having its members provided With ribs and CHAs. KELLER.
