' Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented lJuly 9, 19:18.
Application led April 2, 191,8. ySVVeraINO.,226,225.
deen, in the county of Grays Harbor andk State of Washington, have invented new and useful Improvements in Working- Benches, of which the following is a specifcation,
This invention relates to new and useful improvements in work benches for carpenters and the principal object of the invention is to provide a bench which may be easily folded up and inserted in a tool-chest when not in use.
Another object of the invention is to provide a bench with a shelf for holding tools and the like while its upper part serves the purpose of the ordinary horse or truss or as a platform on which the workmen may stand.
Another object 0f the invention is to provide a device of this character which is simple and durable in Construction, reliable and efficient in operation and one which can be manufactured and placed upon the market at a minimum cost.
The invention also consists in certain other features of construction and in the combination and arrangement of the several parts, to be hereinafter fully described, illustrated in the accompanying drawings and specifically pointed out in the appended claims.
In describing my invention in detail, reference will be had to the accompanying drawings wherein like characters denote like or corresponding parts throughout the several views, and in which Figure 1 is a side view of the device.
Fig. 2 is an end view thereof.
Fig. 3 shows the device in folded position in side view.
Fig. 4 is a bottom view showing the device in folded position.
As shown in these views the device consists of the leg members 1, each of which is formed of a V-shaped frame, each part of the V being composed of the parallel bars 2 spaced apart and connected at their tops by the bar 3 and at their bottoms by the bar 4. The legs of the V are connected together by the cross bars 5 as clearly shown in Fig. 2. l6 represents the foldable portions of the leg members which are formed of looped bars having their ends bent at right angles and engaging openings 7 formed in the bars 2 adjacent their lower ends so that the parts v6 are hinged yto the bars2. The parts 6 may be braced by means of a cross piece 8. The tool supporting shelf is indicated at 9 and the leg members are hinged to this shelf by means of the lugs 10 thereon engaging the extended ends of the bars 4. It will be seen that the V- shaped member has swinging movement on the upper side of the shelf and that the pivotal oint of the parts 6 with said V-shaped mem er is located above said shelf and in order to support said parts 6 when the bench is in open position I provide recesses 11 in the ends of the shelf to receive said parts. These recesses are closed by plates 12 movably secured in position byv the bolts 13 carried by the shelf. 'Io each side edge of the shelf is hinged a leaf 14, and end leaves 14 are'hinged to strips 14X secured to the ends of the shelf. Suitable hooks 16 may be used for connecting the leaves together. The bench is completed by a top plank 15 removably secured to the upper end of the V-shaped members. It is not necessary to carry this plank in the tool-chest as a plank suitable for this purpose may be secured on the particular job on which the mechanic is working.
The bench 9 may be used for holding the tools and the like and the leaves 14 may be supported in-vertical position as shown in Fig. 1 or in horizontal position so as to increase the capacity of the shelf. When the bench is to be knocked down it is simply necessary to remove the plank 15 and to turn the plates 12 vertically to permit the parts 6 to be swung out of the recess and upwardly until they occupy a position between the bars 2 as shown in Fig. 4. The leaves are folded over and then the leg members are folded on top of the leaves and then the device may be placed in a tool-chest and will occupy but little space therein.
It is thought from the foregoing description that the advantages and novel features of my invention will be readily apparent.
I desireV it to be understood'that I may make such changes in the construction and in the combination and arrangement of the several parts, provided that such changes fall within the scope of the appended claims.
What I claim is 1. A device of the class described comprising a shelf, leg members hinged to the upper surface thereof, eXtensible members f2.A A device of the class described comf;
prising a shelf, a pair of V-shaped leg members hinged to the ends thereof, a pair of extensible I members pivotally g connected Copies of this patent may be obtained for five-cents eaeh, lby addressing the Commissioner .of Batents,
with each Vshaped member above the shelf, said shelf having recesses in its ends for receiving said eXtensible members, and moV- Y `able `plates for holding said members in l said recesses. Y
, In testimony whereof I aiiix- `my signature.
