CHARLES EDWARD BAKER, OF OTTAWA, ONTARIO, CANADA.
ADJUSTABLE GARMENT-BAND.
No. 912,6 i2.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Feb. 16, 1909.
Application filed March 2, 1968. Serial No. 8,741.
To all whom it may concern: I Be it known that l, CHARLES Enw inn j BAKER of the c y of Ottawa, in the county of i Carl f o 'nce o Ontario, Canada, have inventet cel iin new and useful lmprovej ments in adjustable Garment Bands, of j I which the following is a specification.
My invention rezates to in Jroveinents in bands, and particulaily to the band gentlemen s trousers, and the objects of ven n are to provide means for y ad usting the same to take up the of the trousers and cause the same to ttly and evenly in position.
l? objects are to reduce the cost of the device and prevent the necessity of unduly imreasing the t-hickne s of the cloth. To this end, the side of the pocket of the trousers s tilized to form a closing flap,
nlity being secured by means of I these on each edge to a slit at one side of the pocket, the cloth in the trousers on the opposite side to the pocket being adapted to lie flatly between the inner side of the pocket and the outside of the cloth on the opposite side of the slit.
In the dra.vings,Figure l is a perspective view showing the side of a pair of trousers equipped with my improved gan ment band, the band being in unfastened position. Fig. 2 is a sectional view through the same in fastened position. Fig. 3 is a side view. Fig. l is a perspective view of the hook or fastener attached to the end of each member. Fig. 5 is a perspective view of one of the attaching members which are secured to each member.
In the drawings, like letters of reference I Referring to the drawings, A represents a portion of a pair of trousers, one side of which is divided into two members B and O by means of a slit a adjacent to the pocket of the trousers. Each of these members B and C have fastening devices 6 and c 011 their extrunities, those illustrated being in the form of hooks suitably sewed to the cloth. Each of the members is further provided with means for engaging the hooks on the opposite member, the means shown comprising a plurality of flat hooks Z) and 0' each of which has ends (Z and c fitting between the pics of cloth sewed in position.
In accordance with the present invention, the inner side D of the pocket is left free along its upper and a portion of its outer vertical edge whereby it may be folded over the flap B when in position, thereby forining a snugly fitting closure.
The inner side of the pocket is retained in closed position by a strap f having a slit 9 therein engaging a suitable button 72, which may be the ordinary suspender button of the trousers By providing these means of adjustment on each side of the trousers, the adjustable back strap at present used may be dispensed with and the trousers made to fit much more smoothly without.
The invention will be found of great use in connection with ready-made trousers or garments in which changes in the size are required to be made after the articles have been manufactured.
As will be seen, the trousers illustrated permit adjustment for five diiferent sizes and more or less might be used if desired.
hat I claim as my invention is:
A pair of trousers having a pocket at one side thereof with the inner lining of the pocket free along its upper edge and a portion of its outer vertical edge and provided with means for detachably securing said upper edge to the trousers, the cloth forming the exterior of the trousers having a slit formed at the end of the pocket, in combination with adjustable fastening devices at the top of each edge of the slit adapted to hold the said edge in a plurality of adjusted positions against the cloth on the opposite side of the slit, the cloth of the trousers 011 the opposite side to the pocket being adapted to lie flatly between the fr e inner side of the pocket and the inside of the cloth on the opposite side of the slit.
In witness whereof I have hereunto set my hand in the presence of two witnesses.
CHARLES ED'WARD BAKER.
