SUSPENDERS.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Application filed December 6, 1907.
Patented July 28, 1908.
Serial No. 405,309.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JAC UES BUSTANOBY, a citizen of the French Republic, and a resident of the borough of Manhattan, city, county, and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Suspenders, of which the following is a specification. I
My invention relates to suspenders combined with a belt in a particular novel manner to enable trousers or other garments to be readily fastened or detached without disturbing the arrangement of the suspender ends and of those suspender parts which support the trousers or other garment.
In the accompanying drawings Figure 1 is a perspective view showing one form of my invention in connection with trousers; Fig. 2 is a perspective View of another form, showing only the suspenders and the belt; Fig. 3 is a vertical section on line 3-3 of Fig. 1; Fig. 4 is a view similar to Fig. 1, of a third form of the invention; Fig. 5 is a vertical section on line 55 of Fig. 4; Fig. 6 is a detail front view showing a further form of my invention in which ordinary suspenders may be used; Fig. 7 is a plan view of this form, drawn upon an enlarged scale, and Fig. 8 is a vertical section on line 88 of Fig. 6.
In each of the forms of my invention, I secure the lower ends of the suspenders to a belt and provide one or the other element of this combined structure (but preferably the suspenders) with suspending members forming part of separable fasteners, the other members of which are secured to the trousers or other garment.
In Figs. 1 and 3 the belt A, which may be closed in front by any suitable adjustable device, such as straps and buckles B, is provided with flexible tongues or tabs C extending upwardly. These tabs, which may be integral with the belt, or secured thereto, have their upper ends stitched or otherwise fastened to frames or slides D, and also carry hooks E which may be held in loops F of the tabs. Through the upper portions of the two front slides D pass the looped ends G of the suspender straps g converging and meeting at the back where they are secured to a short doubled strap H which is connected by the rear slide D with the upper end of the rear tab C. The belt and suspenders form a structure the elements of which are normally connected. Each hook Eforms one member of a detachable or separable garment hook E. The arrangement of the straps K may be altered, and they may be made in various shapes and of various materials.
It will be observed that if the trousers J are raised or lowered by operating the wellknown slide clasps L which adjust the loops G, the position of the belt A will not be aifected, since the folds of the tabs C will simply become more or less pronounced, and the looseness of these folds permits the suspenders and trousers to be adjusted independently of the belt. To detach the trousers from the combined structure formed by the belt and suspenders, it is sufiicient to throw the three straps K off their hooks E, which can be done very quickly. The belt A forms a connection between the several hooks E and keeps them in the proper relative position so that when it is desired to again connect the trousers straps K with the hooks, no adjustment of these hooks is required. The belt also acts as an abdominal band to keep the wearers body warm. The simplicity of the connection between the trousers and the supporting structure is such that it is not necessary to adjust or disturb other garments, such as Waistcoats. The hooks E being suspended from the slides D by the loops F, can perform a pivotal motion sidewise, thus enabling the structure to follow the movements of the wearer.
Of course my invention may be carried out in various other ways. Thus in Fig. 2 I have omitted the tabs C from the belt A, forming part of the combined structure composed of belt and suspenders, but have provided buttons C to which are attached the lower straps a, H of the suspenders. The straps a are connected with the double slides D, to which are also attached the loops F, carrying the hooks E, and the adjustable loops G of .the main suspender straps g. The rear straps H and main straps g are connected with the rear loop f, carrying the rear hook E. The device comprises three detachable fasteners, and each fastener consists of two members, one of which is the hook E. The trousers would be of the same construction as shown in Figs. 1 and 3, that is, they would carry the other members of the detachable fasteners. In the form of my invention represented in Fi 2, the adjustment of the loops G would :fiter the position of the belt A.
In Figs. 4 and 5, the belt A has flexible tabs 0 extended upward and passed through the lower portions of the slides D the upper portions of which receive the bends of the suspender loops G. In this construction also, I employ a structure composed of suspenders and belt. The depending ends of the tabs C may be formed into loops F 2 to hold the fastener members, of triangular form, each comprising a horizontal bar E the ends of which are connected with converging side bars 6, and the central portion of the bar E is adapted for enga ement With the mating fastener member or ook K secured to the trousers J. By lengthening or shortening the loops G, the trousers are lowered or raised without affecting the position-of the belt A, since the tabs C will slide in the lower portions of the slides D. In this case also the pivotal connection of the triangular fastener with the loops F allows the trousers to swing laterally, accommodating themselves to the Wearers movements.
In Figs. 6, 7 and 8 the belt A is constructed in the same manner as shown in Fig. 2, that is, it has no tabs, but buttons C. These buttons are so placed that any ordinary suspender may be connected with them .to form, as before, a structure composed of suspenders and belt. A portion of such asuspender has been shown in Fig. 6. Through the medium of the buttons C I also secure to the beltthe fastening straps E (made of flexible or of rigid material, as preferred), the unattached central portions of which are adapted to be engaged by the hooks K of the trousers or other garment. The hooks K and straps E are in this case the mating members of the detachable fasteners.
. I claim:
1. The combination with a structure consisting of suspenders and of abelt to which the lower ends of the suspenders are attached, of separable fasteners each of which has one of its members secured to said structure, and
the other to the garment to be held up, one of said members being attached at both ends, and the other being arranged to engage the unattached central portion of the first named member.
2. The combination with a structure consisting of suspenders and of a belt to which the lower ends of the suspenders are attached, of separable fasteners each of which has one of its members secured to said structure, and
the other to the garment to be held up," oneof said members being a strap attached at both ends, and the other a hook arranged to engage the central unattached portion of said strap.
3. The combination with a structure consisting of suspenders and of a belt to which the lower ends of the suspenders are attached, of separable fasteners each of which has one of its members secured to said structure, and the other to the garment to be held up, one of said members being attached at two points and free between them, and the other eing arranged to engage said free portion of the first-named member.
4. The combination witha structure comprising a belt having flexible upwardly extending tabs and suspenders connected with said tabs, of means for detachably securing a garment to said structure.
5. The combination with the belt having flexible upwardly extending tabs and suspenders connected with said tabs, of garment fasteners secured to said tabs.
6. The combination of the belt having upwardly extending front and rear tabs with depending end portions and garment fasteners secured to such depending portions, slides located at the upper portions of the tabs, and suspenders secured to the rear slide and having adjustable loop connections with the front slides.
In testimony whereof I have hereunto set my hand in the presence of two subscribing witnesses, this 2nd day of December, 1907.
