A. D. DAILEY, OF TERRE HAUTE, INDIANA.
Letters Patent No. 89,203, dated April 20, 1869.
IMPROVEMENT IN FIRE-PLACES.
The Schedule referred to in these Letters Patent and making part of the lame- To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, A. D. DAILEY, of Telre Haute, in the county of Vigo, and State of Indiana, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Hearth and Back-Plates of Franklin Stoves and Fire-Places; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the same, reference being bad to the annexed drawings, making part of this specification, in which Figure 1 is a perspective View, and
Figure 2 is a vertical transverse section.
Thesame letters in both the figures indicate identical parts.
My improvement relates to the form of the backplates of Franklin stoves and fire-places; and consists in constructing a cast-iron hearth-plate, with afillet cast on the upper face, which, While strengthening the plate, serves also as a fender to prevent'the escape of the coals, said fillet being so inclined on its front or outer face as not to prevent sweeping over it.
In the annexed drawings-- 7 A isthe hearth-plate, made of cast-iron, and having a fillet, B, raised on its upper face, curved, as shown, and extending from jainb to jamb.
This fillet, by strengthening the plate, permits the latter to be made thinner than would be otherwise practicable.
The face nearest the fire-place is nearly vertical, so as to prevent the coals from rolling out on to the floor.
The outer or front face is inclined at an acute angle,
so that a broom may be used to sweep over the fillet into the fire-place.
The hearth is intended to beset on a stone or brick bed, and flush with the floor of the room.
The back-plate, O, isformed as shown, extending across the fire-place. The lower part, from G to O, is vertical. This part is extended upward to about the top of the burning fuel, as in ordinary use.
The portion from O to Cl is constructed on the line of a parabolic curve, that from O to 0* is vertical, and that from O to G is inclined to the rear, extending behind the uptake D.
The advantage of giving to the portion between G and G the parabolic form is, that rays of heat passing I from the fire placed in the focus of the parabola, will- Witnesses:
