IMPROVEMENT IN FIRE-PLACES.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 38,991, dated June 23, 1863.
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, EDWIN A. SKEELE, of the city and county of St. Louis, and State of Missouri, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Fire-Places; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full and clear description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon and made to form a part of this specification.
The nature of this invention relates to the arrangement of an inclined adjustable damper wfth reference to the fire-back and flue, as hereinafter represented, specified, and set forth.
In reference to the accompanying drawings, Figure l is a front elevation, Fig. 2 a vertical sectional side elevation, and Fig. 3 a top View or plan, representing my improvement as applied to practical use.
A represents an ordinary lire-back.
B is a metallic frame similar to those in ordinary use for lire-places.
O is the damper, which will be formed of suitable metal, of proper length and width to nt and close, when desired, the flue-space between the hre-back A and the frame B, as shown in Fig. 2.

The said plate d may be secured to the damper by means of screws, as shown in Figs. l and 3, in such manner as to be detachable therefrom, thereby allowing the damper to be easily adjusted and arranged in lire-places already constructed. The said bar j' may be bent, as shown in Fig. 2, so that it may be driven easily into the wall g of the chimney, and at the same time present the proper angle at which it may be desired to operate the damper. In order to adjust the said damper for use, the bar f will rst be driven into Ithe chimney, as before described, the plate d then placed over the bar in such manner that the said bar will be tted into the recess in the plate before described. The damper will then be secured by means of screws to the said plate.
h is a set-screw, made to work through the damper and bear against the bar f, by means of which the damper may be secured in any desired position with reference to the space afforded between its front edge and the frame B. The construction and arrangement of the said damper are such that when drawn fully forward it will be adapted to fill the entire flue space, and thereby prevent any soot, ashes, or dust from coming from the chimney into the apartment wherein the same may be employed at times when no tire may be needed. The ash pit 7c being adapted to receive said refuse matter, there is no danger that the le will become clogged, even when closed by the damper for considerable length of time.
By reference to Figs. 2 and 3 it will be readily seen that the damper may be adjusted so as to adapt the flue space or draft to the quantity of fuel being consumed in' the tireplace, and also in such manner as to regulate the consumption of fuel by giving more o1' less draft, thereby effecting great economy in fuel. The said damper is also adapted to throw a large amount of heat into the room which would otherwise escape through the flue.
Having thus described my improvementsufcicntly to enable others skilled in the art to make and use the same, what I claim as new of my own invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
The arrangement of the inclined adjustable damper U with reference to the bar f, plate d, screw l1., tire-back A, and frame B, all being constructed and arranged substantially as herein described, for the purposes set forth.
