DAVID STUART AND LEWIS BRIDGE, OF PHILADELPHIA, PENNSYLVAEN IA, ASSIGNORS TO STUART, PETERSON, AND COMPANY, OF SAIJE PLACE.
Letters Patent No. 83,7 98, dated November 3, 1868.
IMPROVEIWENT IN COOKINGSTOVES.
The Schedule referred to in these Letters Patent and making part of the same.
To all whom it may concern- Be it known that we, DAVID STUART and Lnwrs BRIDGE, of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, have invented Improvements in Cooking-Stoves; and we do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the same.
Our invention consists of' certain improvements in cooking-stoves, by which the cooking-capacity of the same may be increased, without a corresponding increase in the size and cost of the stove, all as fully described hereafter.
In order to enable others skilled in the art to make and use our invention, we will now proceed to describe its construction and operation, reference being had to.
the accompanying drawing, which forms a part of this specification, and in which- Figure 1 is a vertical section of our improved cooking-stove;
Figure 2, a plan view; and
Figure 3, a transverse section on the line 1-2, fig. 1.
A is the fire place of the stove, to which fuel is ad e, is formed, the'fiue passing downwards, and communicating with the horizontal flue f, between the bottom of the oven and bottom plate of the stove.
At the rear of the stove is a hollow projection, F, formed by the curved plate g and horizontal plate h, which is riveted to the back plate 1' of the stove, and which has two openings for receiving culinary utensils; and below this plate It is a plate, 1), projecting from the rear plate of the oven, for a purpose described hereafter. v
Between the said plate i and the-back plate of the oven, is aflue, j, which communicates in one direction with the flue, f, and in the other direction with a horizontal flue, it, between the twoovens, which flue com mnnicates with a vertical flue, m, between the front end of the upper oven E and the upper front plate 1: of the stove, the said flue mcommunicating, through the upper fine a, with the exiieopening F, for the passage of the products of combustion.
At the rear of the fire-place, between the top of the oven and the plate G, is a sliding damper, x.
hen this damper is closed, the entire products of combustion from the fire-place, after impinging against the plate G, and the culinary vessels thereon, are directed downwards, by the plate (I, so as to impinge against the top of the oven, from whence they take their course downwards, through the vertical fine .0, along the horizontal flue f, thence beneath the plate p,.and under the plate it, and upwards, through the fiuesj, it, an, and n, to the exit-pipe F.
When the heat'oi the lower oven has to be diminished, the damper 2 may be opened, and more or less of the products of combustion permitted to pass directly through the flues m and n to the eXit-pipe.
It will be seen that without any material increase in the size or cost of the stove, two effective ovens are obtained, the products of combustion passing entirely around the oven D, and in contact with the entire top,
bottom, and two ends or" the same, while the upper oven is sufficiently heated by the contact of the products of combustion with its top, bottom, and one end.
The projection F, as will be readily seen, increases the cooking-capacity of the stove, although this projection may, if desired, be dispensed with, and the flue j be continued without interruption from the flue f to the fine k.
\Vithout claiming broadly a supplementary oven or a plate, h, at the rear of a stove,
WVe claim as our invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent- The arrangement of the ovens D E, fire-place A, plates h and p, flues c f j 7; m, and the damper x a-s herein described.
In testimony whereof, we have signed our names to this specification, in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
DAVID STUART. LEWIS BRIDGE. Witnesses:
WM. A. STEEL, O. B. Pruon.
