"VENTILATOR FOR 4CHIMNEY'S The Schedule referred to inthese Letters Patent and making part of the same.

To all whom 'lt may concern :v

Be it known that I, J. J. PEMBERTON, of Oakland, in the county of Coles, and State of Illinois, have invented a' new and useful Improvement in Ventilating Chimneys; and-1 do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, which `will enable others skilled in the art to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawing, forming part of this specification.

'lhe object of this invention is to provide an improved means for Ventilating chimneys of fire-places, grates, &c.,.by.the admission of the external atmosphere thereto,-to facilitate the draught, to prevent A smoking, also to facilitate combustion, and to prevent the cold air from rushing in through door, window, and other cracks, chilling the room, all as hereinafter more fully specified.

Figure 1 represents a fireplace provided with my improved Ventilating-apparatus.

Figure 2 represents a transverse sectional elevation of the same, taken in the line x x of iig. 1.-

I propose to form the arch for supporting the brick above the fire-place of perforated metallic tubes A, either of cast or wrought-metal, and in any preferred form, whether arched,ator otherwise, to be supported by vertical tubes B, placed in the jambs, and

connected at the base with pipes communicating with the external atmosphere.

These ventilators lnay serve to form, also, orna mental fronts to the fireplaces or gratos, and may be placed therein in the construction ofthe chimneys, or they may be arranged to be afterward put in place.

The air is deliveredthrough thev pelforations at the upper part A of the arches, and, if preferred, vthe vertical part Bmay also be perforated.

What I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-

Metallic ventilatng-arches AA B, constructed and arranged for application tothe chimneys, substantially as specified.'
