UNITED STATES FAITENI OFFICE.,
W. R. WARDEN, OF BOSTON, MASSACHUSETTS.
FIREPLACE.
Specification of Letters Patent No. 21,094, dated .Aug-ust 3, 1858.
To all whom t may concern:
Be it known that I, WILLIAM R. IVARDEN, of Boston, in the county of Suffolk and State of Massachusetts, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Fireplaces of Buildings; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and eXact description of the same, reference being had to the annexed drawings, making part of this specification.
Figure l, is a vert-ical longitudinal section of the fire place, at the line l, l, of Fig. 2, and looking from the back part of the same. Fig. 2, is a vertical transverse section of the same.
Similar letters in the figures refer to cor responding parts.
The nature of this invention and improvement consists in inserting and securing in fire places a metallic frame, within which is placed a vertical plate perforated for the reception of a stove pipe, and capable of being raised and lowered to accommodate the opening to the stove pipe, in such a manner as to form an ornamental front which shall entirely close the fire place and be capable of easy attachment and detachment therefrom.
To enable others skilled in the art of make and use my invention I will proceed to describe its construction and operation.
The mantel piece or architrave A, pilasters B, and panel in which the opening into the chimney C, is formed, are made in the usual or most approved ornamental manner.
In the opening leading into the chimney is inserted a metallic frame D, exactly Fitting in the opening and having flanges or moldings formed on its sides and bottom, which rest against the panel of the fire place, and an ornament-al arched flange on its inner and upper part. This metallic frame is secured in its place by buttons E, fastened by screw pins on which they turn, to its inner part, and capable of being turned so as to bring their ends inside the brick work, so as to secure the frame firmly and when turned and relieved from the brick work, to enable the frame to be readily removed from the fire place.
Grooves are formed on the inner sides of the frame D, in which is inserted a vertical metallic plate F, which slides up and down in these grooves, spaces Gr, G, being made in the brick work above and below the frame D, to allow the free up and down movement of the said plate F.
A circular aperture is formed in the plate F, through which is passed the pipe I, of the stove, when one is used in the apartment in which the fire place is situated. This ap-` erture is covered by a circular cap piece during the summer season or at other times when a stove is not used, and by raising or lowering the plate in its grooves, can be graduated to any desired height of smoke pipe.
The attachment of this metallic frame D, to re places produces an ornamental iinish and decoration to the same, while the sliding character of the plate F, admits of the circular opening being raised or lowered to suit the height of the smokepipe, when a stove is used in. the apartment.
Wvhat I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is,
The combination and arrangement of the ornamental metallic frame D, and vertical slide F, containing smokepipe opening, within the lire place, in the manner and for the purpose before described.
WILLIAM R. WARDEN.
