SUNBONNET.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Application filed December 16, 1907.
Patented April 14, 1908.
Serial No. 406,677.
Letters Patent N 0. 833950 dated Octo er 23 1906, and a second specification formin part of Letters Patent No. 877 ,029, date January 21, 1908. In common with said previous improvements the leading objects of the present invention are to ada t the sunbonnet to be effectively laundered efore and after use; to adapt the same to be acked flat for storage and shipment, where y a great saving in paper boxes, wooden packin cases, freight and cartage is effected; to who ly dispense with detachable parts and open seams with their fastenings, and especially with hooks and eyes and the like, so as to avoid the production of rust spots; and to obviate the employment of elastics, which are liable to become permanently inoperative, and are objectionable because of their pressure upon the head.
The leading object which distinguishes the present invention is to provide for securing the advantages above stated in a sunbonnet, the crown portion of which may be made larger to any required extent without correspondingly enlarging the puff portion, and in which the puff portion can be adjusted and shaped independently of the crown portion so as to present a more pleasing appearance and the crown portion may be subsequently adjusted and fitted to the head of the wearer.
Other objects will be set forth in the general description which follows.
A sheet of drawings accompanies this specification as part thereof.
Figure 1 1s a face view of the sunbonnet as flattened and folded in packing the same in boxes; Fig. 2 is a face view of the same showing its other face in its flattened conditionbut unfolded; Figs. 3 and 4 are side views of the sunbonnet showing it respectively as it appears before the adjusting strings of the crown portion are tied, and in the shape in which it is worn; and Fig. 5 is a fragmentary detail view hereinafter mentioned.
Like reference characters refer to like parts in all the figures.
The improved sunbonnet, in common with those set forth in my previous specification, includes a relatively stiff or stiffenable crown portion, a, a puff portion, 6, of relatively soft fabric, and a cape portion, 0, which may be and preferably is formed in one part with said puff portion. To the rear edge of the crown portion a, which is preferably and conveniently straight as shown, the upper edge of the puff portion 1) is stitched fast in a central position after being gathered to give the puff portion the required fullness. At a lower point the puff portion 1) is provided' with a transverse draw-string pocket, d, and with a draw string, 6, Fig. 5, within said pocket for gathering the puff more or less at will at that point. This line may determine the upper edge of the cape portion 0 as heretofore, but has no fixed relation to the rear edge of the crown portion a, as indicated in Figs. 1 and 2, which enables additional fullness to be thrown into the pufi as may be desired.
The drawing string e is preferably and conveniently fastened at both ends 1n this arrangement, and exposed at mid length by an opening, f, Fig. 5, in the pocket (1; but this and other details of construction which are not included in my claim hereto appended are not considered material.
The crown portion a when flattened extends laterally beyond the pufl portion 1) at both sides, as best shown in Figs. 1 and 2, and a pair of strings, 1 and 2, for adjusting the crown portion are fixedly attached to the rear edges of the laterally projecting ends of the crown portion; these strings being tieable behind the puff portion and so as to mask its draw-string pocket after the crown portion is separately adjusted by means of the draw string 6. Compare Figs. 3 and 4.
The crown portion a may be made with or without an edge ruffle, 9; means for fastening the bonnet under the chin, consisting preferably of the customary pair of tie strings 3 and 4, are attached to the lateral extremities of the crown portion. Other fastening means may obviously be substituted for such tie strings 3 and 4, and other like modifications will suggest themselves to those skilled in the art.
Having thus described said improvement, I claim as my invention and desire to patent under this specification:
A flattenable sunbonnet including a puff portion of soft fabric permanently gathered at its upper edge to give it the required fullness an provided at a lower point with a transverse draw-string pocket and with a draw string within said pocket for athering 5 the puff portion more or less at wil at that point, a relatively stifl crown portion to the rear edge of which said gathered upper edge of the puff portion is stitched fast in a central position and which projects laterally at both -10 sides beyond said puff portion when the bonnet is flattened, strings tieable behind the pufi portion to adjust the bonnet to the head attached to the rear edge of the 1aterally projecting ends of the crown ortion, and means for fastening the bonnet eneath the chin attached to the lateral extremities of said crown ortion, substantially as hereinbefore speci ed.
