This invention relates to a lip shield of the type commonly used by women for preventing soiling of garments with lipstick and the like when the garments are put on or removed, such as by slipping them over the wearers head.

It is the object of this invention to produce a lip shield of the type described which is constructed from a flat foldable blank of sheet material and which in the folded condition provides a pair of li protecting members which are held firmly in a position to shield the users lips when the folded portion of the blank is gripped between the users teeth.

The lip shield of this invention is preferably formed of sheet material such as heavy paper or the like and comprises a blank I shaped generally as indicated in Figure 1. One edge I I of the blank is fashioned to correspond more or less to the general lip line of an upper lip while the opposite edge I2 of the blank is shaped to conform to the lip line of a lower lip. At each end of the blank Ii! edges II and I2 are rounded and intersect at approximately the mid portion of the blank as indicated at points I3 and I4. In order to permit folding of the blank readily and accurately into a shape adapted for use as a lip shield, the blank is provided with a plurality of score lines or lines of perforation. One score line I extends across blank ||l between points I3 and I4 and divides the blank into upper and lower portions, I6 and. M, respectively. The upper portion I6 is provided with a score line I8 extending across the blank and spaced between the upper edge II and the score line I5. The lower portion I! of the blank is likewise provided with a score line I9 spaced between the lower edge I2 and the score line I5. Score lines I8 and I9 are preferably of slightly arcuate contour and symmetrical with respect to score line I5. Lines I8 and I9 are spaced from the edges II and I2 so that the outer portions of the blank defined by these score lines form upper and lower lip protecting members 2| and 22 which, when the blank is folded in a manner to be described, are adapted to extend before and shield the users lips.

The blank Ill is also scored along the lines indicated at 23, 24, 25 and 26. Lines 23 and 24 extend at one end from line l5 and intersect at their other end at line I8 to form a triangular shaped dait TI on the upper half I6 of blank I2 and lines 25 and 26 form a similar dart 28 on the lower half I'l' of blank III.

21 and 28 are preferably symmetrical with respect to score lines I5 and located midway between points I3 and I4.

For the purpose of convenience in packing and dispensing, the lip shields will normally be supplied to the user in the flat, that is, in the form of the blank shown in Figure 1. When it is desired to assemble the blank into the usable form of a lip shield, the blank is first folded fiat on itself along score line I5 and the lip protecting members 2| and 22 are bent outwardly away from each other along score lines I8 and I9 as is shown in Figure 2. When folded in this manner, a pair of bite members 29 and 3B are provided which are adapted to be gripped between the users teeth. The bite members 29 and 3B are then pleated in the fiat by folding them in a direction toward each other along the folded edge, 3| as indicated by the arrows in Figure 3, so that they overlay the

The lip protecting members 2| and 22 are thereby provided with a curvature in the longitudinal direction, as shown in Figures 4 and. 7, which conforms more or less to the receding contour of the face in the region of the mouth. The curved contour thus imparted to the lip protecting members 2| and 22 prevents these members from being bent downwardly toward one another and serves to maintain them substantially perpendicular to the bite portions 29 and 36. After the blank has been folded in this manner, it may be inserted into the users mouth and the

29 and 30 gripped between the users teeth. It will be appreciated that with the folded portion of the shield gripped between the users teeth, the

29 and 30 will be held in the pleated condition and will thereby maintain the curved contour of the lip protecting members 2| and 22. Since this curved contour serves to hold the lip members in an upright position before the users lips, the lip members are prevented from being accidently or otherwise bent downwardly away from the users lips as long as the folded portion is gripped firmly between the teeth.

If, instead of forming score lines I 8 and H] with an arcuate contour as shown in Figure 1, blank I is scored with straight lines along the inner edges of the lip protecting members 2| and 22, it will be appreciated that in the folded position of the lip shield the lipprotecting members will not have an arcuate contour in the longitudinal direction. 2 Ea'chof the lip protecting'members will merely have one half thereof angularly disposed with respect to its other half. 1. A lip shield comprising a blank "of":light" sheet material having along opposite sides thereof'outer portions shaped to provide'lip protecting. members and a central portion connecting said outer portions, said central portionbeing ar ranged to be folded flat upon itself along a line spaced substantially midway between said outer portions to present a folded edge with the lip protecting members in substantial juxtaposition, said lipprotecting members being arranged to be bent outwardlyalong their inner edges awa from each other so as to extend before and shield theupper and lower lips when the central portion is folded along said line and gripped be tween the users teeth, said central portion being scored from said line to the inner edges of said lip protecting members, said-scoring being arranged to permit angular pleating of said central portion when folded 'with the-pleated portion sandwiched between adjacent sections of said folded centralportion so as'to shortenthe eiTective length of said folded edge, of said central portion relative to the inner connecting edges of said lip protecting members;

2. A lip shield comprising a blank of sheet material provided with a pair'of arcuate shaped score lines spaced inwardly from opposite edges thereof to-form a pair of lip protecting members along opposite edge portions of said blank, said blank also being provided with a substantially straight score line spaced midway between said other-rscore lines; said blahkbeing' further provided with score'lines extendingin spaced relation from said central score line and converging at said first mentioned score lines to form integral triangularly shaped portions therebetween, said triangular portions being centrally located between the edge portions of said blank, whereby when said blank is folded fiat upon itself along said central score line with said lip portions bent outwardly away from each other along said first mentioned score lines and with said folded portion pleated so that said triangularly shaped portions interlay between adjacent sections of said folded portion, said lip protecting members are provided with an arcuate contour in.horizontal section which serves to maintain them in said outwardly bent position when said folded icentral portion is gripped between the user's teeth.

3. "A lip shield comprising a blank of sheet material-shaped to provide a pair of spaced apart lip protecting members along opposite edge portions of -the blank and a central portion between said lip protecting ,members, the inner -1ongi-. tudinaledgesvof said lipprotecting members forming the connecting edges between said lip protecting membersand said central portion, said blank being scored along said connecting edges, said central portion being scored along a central line spaced-substantially midway between said connecting edges to permit'folding of the central portion flat upon itself; said central portion being provided with at'least'two additional pair of score lines, each pair Ofscore lines extending in opposite directions from said central score line and the score lines in each pair convergingat a point on said connecting edges to form triangularly shaped portions on opposite sides'of said central-score =lin'e,'said"triangularly shaped portions being in substantial juxtaposition when the central portion is folded flatupon itself along said central score line.
