To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, GEORGE WORDINGHAM, citizen of the United States, residing at Milwaukee, in the county of Milwaukee and State of Wisconsin, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Shirt- Waist Forms, of which the following is a specification.

This invention relates to garment forms and has as its object to provide, as a new article of manufacture, a shirt waist form which may be employed either by the manufacturer or dealer, or which may be used in the laundry, the form' being adapted to be, in any event, arranged within a shirt waist in such a manner as to prevent creasing of the waist if wrapped in a bundle, or to afford protection to the waist if placed in an ordinary shirt waist box.

It is another aim of the invention to provide a shirt waist form so constructed and adapted to be so folded or set up as to display the embroidery or lace work of the waist in an effective and artistic manner, and especially as concerns the bosom, shoulder and collar portions thereof.

A further aim of the invention is to provide a form of the class described which may be readily packed and shipped in large quantities in flat condition and whichmay be readily and quickly folded or set up when required for use.

Further the invention aims to so construct the form that after it has been set up and a waist has been arranged thereon, the form may be employed as a hanger adapting the waist to be hung within a closet or the like until it is desired to wear the same, thereby obviating the necessity of packing the waist in a drawer where it will be liable to become crumpled or creased.

Further the inventionhas as its object to so construct the form that a waist arranged thereon will not be liable to become displaced or disarranged, nor will the form itself be liable to become accidentally unfolded.

Still further the invention aims to provide a shirt waist form of such construction that the same may be stamped from a rectangular blank of card-board or any other suitable material without waste of the material and by a single stamping or cutting operation.

In the accompanying drawings: Figure l is a perspective view illustrating the form embodying the present invention having a waist arranged thereon. Fig. 2 is a perspective view of the form in condition ready for use. Fig. 3 is a vertical sectional view on the line 3-3 of Fig. 2. Fig. 4 is a rear elevation of the upper end of the form. Fig. 5 1s a plan view of the blank in its initial condition. Fig. 6 is a View similar to Fig.4, illustrating a slight modification of the inventlon.

Corresponding and like parts are referred to in the following description and indicated in all the views of the accompanying drawings by the same reference characters.

As clearly illustrated in Fig. 5 of the drawings, the shirt waist form embodying the present invention is stamped or cut from a rectangular blank of card-board or any other suitable relatively stiff material, the blank comprising a fiat body portion 1 formed with a relatively short incision 2 extending downwardly at right angles from its upper and with branch incisions 3 extending first along curved lines in opposite directions from the lower end of the incision 2 and thence substantially parallel to each other and finally along diverging curved lines, as indicated at 4:. At each side of the incision 2 the blank is formed with relatively short parallel incisions 5 extending downwardly. at right angles from its upper edge. The blank is also formed below the lower end of each incision 4 with parallel diagonal incisions 6. The blank in its condition just described, is, as will be readily understood, adapted to be packed in large numbers in flat condition for storage or shipment, and the manner of setting up or folding the blank will now be described.

When it is desired to use the blank, the portions at the opposite sides of the

2 and 3 are rolled over in the direction of one side (the rear side whenthe blank is set up) in the manner shown in Figs. 2, 3 and L, so as to form shoulder rolls 7., the edge portions of the shoulder rolls resting substantially flat against the rear side of the body portion of the blank. In the act of forming these rolls, the tabs which result from the formation of the slits 5 and which are indicated by the numeral 8, are inserted through the slits 6 at the respective sides of the blank. By reference to Fig. 5 of the drawings it will be observed that the slits are located nearer the vertical median line of the blank with which line the incision 2 is coincident than are the tabs 8 so that the shoulder rolls 7 will be of somewhat conical the lateral edges of the blank, whereby to' f form, being of greater diameter at their outer ends than at their inner or adjacent ends. It will furthermore be apparent, and particularly upon reference to Figs. 2, '3 and 4, that the said shoulder rolls do not lie horizontally but only approximately so, they being slightly inclined downwardly toward simulate the natural slight slope of the shoulders of a person. The tabs 8 of course serve to hold the shoulder rolls in rolled condition. Y

In the folding of the blank, in the manner above explained, to form the shoulder rolls 7 the portion of the blank between the incisions 3 and-4 is left within the plane of the body portion of the blank and of course projects above'the said shoulder rolls, and this portion, indicated by the numeral 9, constitutes the hanger tab of the form, and to this end is provided with an opening 10 whereby. it may be engaged with a nail or hook. It will be observed that inasmuch as the incisions are curved in opposite directions and away. from the vertical median line of the form, inclined edges 11 are formed at the lower end of the hanger tab 9, and the purpose of these edges will be presently explained. It will furthermore be observed by reference to Fig. 5, that proecting portions 12 are left integral with the inner end portions of the shoulder rolls and in forming the rolls, these portions overlap at the back of the body portion of the form and at the lower end of the hanger tab 9, asclearly illustrated in Fig. 4 of the drawings. These portions 2 serve to reinforce the shoulder rolls and tend to prevent buckling of the bosom portion of the form at its longitudinal middle. Furthermore, if desired, a fastening device of any-character may be secured through the portion 12 and through the body portion of the form in the manner shown in Fig. 6 of the drawings, this securing device being indicated by the numeral 12 From the foregoing description of the invention, it will be seen that there is provided a shirt waist form, large numbers of which may be packed in a minimum space, and which form may be readily set up when required for use and a shirt waist readily and quickly fitted thereto and properly folded. It will furthermore be apparent that due to the peculiar construction of the upper or bosom portion of the form and the provision of shoulder rolls 7, the corresponding portions of the waist fitted to the form will be displayed in an artistic and effective manner, simulating the appearance of these portions of the waist when or collar of the waist, and by reason of this fact, the waist is prevented from becoming disarranged on the form or, in other words, laterally displaced, and in fact, due to the peculiar curvature of the edge portions 11 of this tab, the neck or collar of the waist has a tendency to at all times assume a centered position upon the form. It will be apparent, furthermore, that the shoulder blank being provided at each side of the first mentioned incision withspaced incisions extending downwardly from its upper edge, the portions of the blank between the/ spaced incisions constituting tabs, the portions of the blank between the first and second mentioned incisions and the lateral edges of the blank being adapted to be rolled upon themselves whereby to form shoulder portions, the blank adjacent the lower ends of the branch incisions being formed with spaced slits in which the second mentioned tabs are to be inserted when the said portions of the blank are rolled upon themselves, the portions of the blank at. the opposite sides of the first mentioned incision and immediately adjacent thereto being adapted to overlap at a point adjacent the lower end of the suspension tab when the first mentioned portions of the blank are rolled whereby to permit the said overlapped portions being secured together to assist in retaining the first mentioned portions in rolled condition.
