application February 21, 1956,, Serial No. 566,837. Divided and this application November 20, 1956, Serial No. 623,369
1 Claim. (Cl. 2'-146) My invention relates broadly to neckties and more particularly to neckties having symmetrically arranged side webbing with longitudinally extending multiple folds therein, coextensive with the entire length of the front section of the necktie, the multiple folds progressively reducing in width from the rear to the front of the necktie and terminating in a central ornamental front display panel.
I This application is a division of my application Serial No. 566,837, filed February 21, 1956, now Patent No. 2,800,661, dated July 30, 1957, for Neckties;
Oneof the objects of my invention is to provide a. construction of necktie which includes an expansible web formed in opposite sides of the front section of the necktie when viewed slightly in profile for enhancing the aesthetic effect of the necktie.
Another object of my invention is to provide a construction of necktie in which the front portion is connected with a rear portion by side inserts constituted by a multiplicity of superimposed folds which are spreadable to produce a highly aesthetic effect and to provide ribs for reinforcing the tie for maintenance of the shape of the tie over a long period of wear.
Still another object of my invention is to provide a consti'uction of necktie having in its front section a central display panel flanked on each side by multi-folded web sections coextensive with the longitudinal dimension of the display panel and where the transverse dimension 'of each of the multi-folded web sections progressively reduce in width from the rear to the front of the necktie providing an unobstructed view of the marginal portions of the multi-folded web sections for the entire length of the front section of the necktie whereby the ornamentation provided by the marginal portions of the multifolded web sections supplement the ornamental eifect of the central display panel for the entire length of the front section of the necktie.
Other and further objects of my invention relate to a construction of necktie by which the necktie may be stiifened and the shape thereby retained over a long period of wearing life as set forth more fully in the specification hereinafter following by reference to the ac companying drawings, in which:
Fig. 1 is a front elevational view of the necktie structure embodying my invention;
Fig. 2 shows a rear view of the necktie shown in Fig. 1;
Fig. 3 is an enlarged view looking at the front of the display end of the necktie, the front being broken away to illustrate the echelon arrangement of the multiple fold inserts in each side of the necktie;
Fig. 4 is a side elevational view of the display end of the necktie illustrated in Fig. 3;
Fig. 5 is a transverse sectional view taken on line 5--5 of Fig. 3;
Fig. 6 is a transverse sectional view taken on line 6-6 of Fig. 2; and
Fig. 7 is an end view looking up at the bottom of the display end of the necktie.
Patented May 26, 1959 My invention is directed to a construction of necktie which possesses superior wearing qualities and includes means for reinforcing the necktie for. maintenance of the shape of the necktie over a long wearing life of the necktie superior to conventional necktie construction.
I construct the display end of the necktie separate and apart from the neckband portion and the opposite terminating end of the necktie and subsequently connect the display end of the necktie to the neckband portion. The display end of the necktie according to my invention is formed by an ornamental front and back portion which are interconnected at their opposite sides by inserts formed by multiple-folded longitudinally extending sections. These multiple-folded longitudinal sections are stitched along their edges to the front and back portions of the necktie. The longitudinally extending multiple folded inserts may be arranged with their folds in echelon in which event the front panel of the display portion of the necktie is formed narrower than the rear panel of the necktie and the multiple-folded inserts provide a step-like formation at opposite borders of the front panel producing a most aesthetic and ornamental appearance. The multiple folded inserts at each side of the necktie porvide a third dimensional or depth eflfect to the display portion of the necktie when viewed slightly in profile. The multiple folds constitute strengthening ribs extending longitudinally at opposite sides of the front and rear panels of the display end of the necktie and eliminate curling and distortion of the necktie, insuring a long wearing life while maintaining a fresh aesthetic appearance.
Referring to the drawings in more detail, reference character 25 designates the display portion of the necktie terminating in an end portion interconnected by the stitched connection 27. The display portion 25 includes a front panel 28 and a rear panel 29, where the front panel 28 is substantially narrower in width than the rear panel 29. The longitudinally extending marginal edges of the two panels 28 and 29 are interconnected by the left-hand side web section 30 and the right-hand inserted web section 31.
The front panel 28 hasthe marginal edges 32 and 33 thereof turned inwardly. The" marginal edges of the left-hand and right-hand side web-inserted sections 30 and 31 are turned inwardly as represented at 36 and 37, and are connected by concealed threads with inturned marginal edges 34 and 35 of the rear panel 29. The left and right-hand side web-inserted sections 31 have a multiplicity of folds arranged in echelon. That is to say, the left-hand and right-hand side web-inserted sections progress outwardly step-by-step in opposite directions from the front panel 28 and connect with the rear panel 29. The aesthetic effect produced is that of a multiplicity of ornamental extending edges on opposite sides of the front panel 28. These multiple folds at each side of the front panel 28 give a third dimensional effect when the necktie is viewed partially in profile from either side thereof. That is to say the central display panel 28 is flanked on opposite sides by the multi-folded webbing 30 and 31 which provide the aesthetic ornamental and mechanically reinforcing effect.
The front and rear panels 28 and 29 and the multiple folded left-hand and right-hand side inserted web sections 30 and 31 are stitched to the display section 25 of the necktie as represented at 38, viewed from the front of the necktie as in Fig. 1, and at 39 as viewed from the opposite side of the necktie as in Fig. 2.
The terminating end portion 26 of the necktie is provided with a lining 40 which is stitched at one end i to the terminating end portion of the necktie by a spirally arranged stitching 41 and at the other end by stitching 48. The terminating end of the necktie 26 has the marginal edges thereof turned inwardly as represented at 42 3 v and 43 as shown more clearly in Fig. 6. The ends of the lining are turned inwardly as represented at 44 and 45. These inturned edges are stitched in a manner which conceals the stitches and obscures the stitches from external view. A rear strap 46 is provided on the back of the rear panel 29 for receiving the terminating end 26 of the necktie when the necktie is tied in a wearing position.
The side-web-inserted sections 30 and 31 are preformed in the cloth sections before the cloth sections are inserted between the front and rear panel of the necktie. That is, the multiple folds or creases are pressed therein so that they retain their shape and reinforce the opposite edges of the front and rear panels. The folds are not intended to reverse themselves and accordingly may be creased very firmly into the multiple folds of the inserted sections. The inserted sections, while being freely expansible intermediate their opposite ends, are gathered at their opposite ends; that is, the upper ends of the inserts 30 and 31 are attached to the display portion of the necktie 25 at 38 and 39, While the lower end thereof terminates as represented in Fig. 7.
The side web-inserted sections 30 and 31 are stitched at their upper ends 30A and 31A at 38 and 39, whereas at their lower ends these inserts are turned inwardly and folded as represented in Figs. 8 and 9 and connected by the concealed stitches 47 similar to the stitching of the longitudinal sections or webbings of the necktie 30 and 31 and connected at 30B and 31B. These inserts 30 and'31 are coextensive with the front panel 28 and do not terminate short of the end of the front panel 28. Thus, the side web inserts give a third dimensional effect for the entire length of the necktie when viewed in pro- .file, commencing in a position adjacent the top of the display portion of the necktie to peripheral edges of the terminating end of the display portion of the necktie. Each of the side web-inserted sections are expansible and to provide for the required third dimensional effect, I construct these inserted web sections of a width which is slightly less than the front panel of the necktie. That is to say, for a front panel 28, having a maximum width of approximately 1%" the side web-inserted sections 30 and 31 have a maximum exposed width of 1 /2". I L The V-shaped stitching 38 nd 39 is so located in the 45 2,371,947
necktie that this stitching is concealed by the knot or loop of the necktie when the necktie is tied in a four-inhand manner.
I have found the construction of the necktie of my invention disclosed herein highly practical and effective and although I have described by invention in certain preferred embodiments I realize that modifications may be made, and I desire that it be understood that no limitations upon my invention are intended other than may be imposed by the scope of the appended claim.
What I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States is as follows:
A necktie comprising a longitudinally extending rear panel, a coextensive front panel, having the opposite peripheral edge portions thereof turned inwardly into surface contact with the front surface of said rear panel and the rear surface of said front panel, said front panel having a width substantially less than the width of said rear panel, a pair of separate sections of multiple folded webbing located on opposite sides of said front panel with the folds of said webbing arranged in echelon-extending progressively from the longitudinal edgeof said 'rear panel to the adjacent longitudinal edge of said front panel, said separate sections of multiple folded webbing having longitudinally extending peripheral edge portions coextensive with the lengths of said front and rear panels and terminating with the free end of said front panel, one of the edge portions of said multiple folded webbing sections being connected with the inwardly turned edge portions of said front panel at each side of said front panel, the folds of said multiple folded webbing sections each having a transverse width less than the transverse "width of said front panel enabling the front panel'of said necktie and said multiple folded webbing sections to be expanded and contracted with respect to the rear panel for displaying said multiple folded sections of webbing in perspective at each side of said front panel.
