Description

No. 870,467. PATENTED NOV. '5, 1907.
W. J. ROCHE. Q SHAVING BRUSH. APPLICATION FILED IEBJI, 1907.
WILLIAM JANSON ROCHE, OF NEW BETHLEHEM, PENNSYLVANIA.
SHAVING-BRUSH.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Nov. 5, 1907.
Application filed February 11. 1907- Serial No. 356,750.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, WILLIAM J. ROCHE, a citizen of the United States of America, residing at New 'Bethle hem, in the county of Clarion and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Shaving-Brushes, of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawing.
This invention relates to shaving brushes, and th invention has for its object to provide a combination handle and casing for a brush.
To this end, I have devised novel means for housing a brush when the same is not being used, said means serving functionally as a handle, when the brush is to be used. In this connection, my invention is .primarily intended for shaving brushes, but it is obvious that the principal of my invention can be readily used in connection with various other kinds of brushes, where it is desired to protect the bristles of a brush while the same is out of use.
The detail construction entering into my invention will be readily understood when taken in connection with the drawing accompanying this specification, and referring to the drawing forming part of this 'specification; like numerals of reference designate corresponding parts throughout the several views, in which:-
Figure l is an elevation of a shaving brush constructed in accordance with my invention, Fig. 2 is a vertical sectional view of the same, illustrating the casing or handle thereof, partly open, Fig. 3 is a perspective view of a yoke constituting part of my invention, Fig. 4 is an elevation of the shaving brush detached from its handle or casing. v
In the practice of my invention, I provide an end cap or base 1, which constitutes a support for a brush carrying member, and also constitutes means to which the sections forming the combined handle and casing for the brush are hinged. Connected to the inner face of this end cap or base, as by bolt 3, is a yoke 2, which carries the brush, and in which yoke the brush is pivotally-mounted in a manner that will permit of inclosing the bristles of the brush within the handle when not in use, as will be hereinafter described. The upper ends of the arms 4 are bent inwardly, as at 5, and formed with substantially semi-cylindrical confronting faces 6. The ends of the arms 4 are flared and grooved as at 7, whereby the body 8 of a brush 9 can be placed between the arms 4 of the yoke. The body of the brush which is cylindrical is provided with diametrically opposed vertical grooves 10 to receive the upper ends of the arms 4, and with an ornamental end 21.
To retain the body 8 in engagement with the arms 4 screws or pins 11 are employed, said screws or pins passing through oval openings 12 formed in the arms 4 near the upper ends thereof and engaging in the body 8 of the brush 9. By this construction of the brush, it
can be swung around to an inverted position between the arms 4 of the yoke 2, the oval openings 12 permitting of a free movement during this operation.
The end cap or base 1 is provided with two semicylindrical hinged sections 14 adapted to inclose the yoke 2 and form a casing 01 handle according to the positionof the brush 9. The sections 14 are hinged to the cap 1 as at 15, and have their upper edges reamed as at 16, to engage in an annular groove 17 formed in the body portion 8 of the brush, and in the grooved ends of the arms 4, for holding the brush in a useful position, while the reamed edges 16 engage in a similar groove 18 for holding the brush 9 within the handle or casing.
To retain the sections 14 together, I provide said sections with pierced resilient lugs 19 adapted to engage over teats 20 carried by the adjoining section.
The cap 1, sections 14 and yoke 2 are preferably constructed of meta-l and the cap and said sections can be suitably ornamented as illustrated in Fig. 1 to present a neat and attractive appearance.
From the foregoing description taken in connection with the drawing, it will be observed that I have devised a simple and inexpensive combination casing and handle for a brush, the casing being easily and quickly opened, when it is desired to place the brush in a useful position.
The grooves 10 and the upper ends of the arms 4 serve to maintain the brush in a vertical and locked position, and the resiliency of the arms 4 permits of said arms further separating to allow the body portion 8 of the brush to swing between said arms.
Such changes in the size, proportion and minor details of construction, as are permissible by the appended claims, may be resorted to without departing from the spirit and scope of the invention.
What I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is:,
1. The combination with a brush having a body portion, of a combined casing and handle consisting of a cap, a yoke carried thereby and having arms formed with semicylindrical confronting faces, said arms having openings formed therein, pins or screws extending through said openings and engaging in the body of said brush, semicylindrical sections hinged to said cap. and having reamed edges to engage in said body and said arms, and means to hold said sections together.
2. The combination with a brush having a body portion, of a combination casing and handle consisting of a cap, a yoke carried thereby, and having arms adapted to engage said body portion, pins or screws passing through said arms and engaging in said body portion, semi-cylindrical sections hinged to said cap and adapted to embrace said arms and said body portion, and means to lock said sections in a closed position.
3.-'Ihe combination with a brush having a body portion, of an end cap, a yoke secured to said end cap and having arms adapted to embrace said body portion, hinged sections carried by said end cap adapted to inclose said yoke, and said body portion, and means to hold said sections in a closed position.
4. A shaving brush having a body portion, a yoke pivotally connected thereto, an end cap to which said yoke is connected, handle-sections hinged to said end cap, and adapted toembrace said body portion and said yoke, and means to hold said sections in a closed position.
5. A brush having a combined handle and casing consisting of a yoke pivotally connected to said brush. an end cap, handle sections carried by said end cap and adapted to inclose the yoke, and means to hold said sections in a closed position, substantially as described 6. The combination with a brush, of a yoke piyolal y connected thereto, an end cap and hinged sectins carried by said end cap and adapted to inclose the yoke.
7. In a brush, an end cap or base constituting" a sup port for a lnuslrcarrying nieniber, said b1ash-carrying member, a brush piyotally hung in said brnslrcarryine member, handle sections hinged to said end cap, and means for securing the hinged handle sections in closed position.
8. In a shaving brush, an end cap, a yoke connected thereto, a brush body pivotally hung in the outer end of the yoke, handle sections hinged to the end cap, and means carried by said handle sections for engagement with the brush body to hold the latter in alined position with the yoke.
S). In a shaving brush, a combined handle and brush casing: comprising an end cap and two hinged sections closed at one end by the end cap and bent at the other end. a yoke mounted within the sections, a brush holder pivotally hung in the outer end of said yoke, and means carried by the hinged sections and engaging the brush holder for securing the latter in alincd position with the yokev In testimony whereof I aflix my signature in the pres--. ence of two witnesses.
WILLIAM .TANSON ROCHE.
Witnesses I W. W. Connn'r'r, DANISL M. Gms'i.
