JOHN J. SULLIVAN, OF NEW YORK, N. Y.
MAIL- BOX.
SPECIFIGATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 748,541, dat d December 29, 1903. Application filed April 13, 1903. Serial No. 152,335. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, J OHN J. SULLIVAN, a citizen of the United States, residing at New York, in the countyof New York and State of p New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Mail-Boxes, of which the following is a specification, such as will enable those skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
The object of this invention is to provide an ordinary mail-box with an attachment for holding mail-matter which cannot be passed into the box; and with this and other objects in view the invention consists in an attachment for mail-boxes of the class specified, constructed as hereinafter described and claimed.
The invention is fully disclosed in the following specification, of which the accompanying drawings form a part, in which the separate parts of my improvement are designated by suitable reference characters in each of the views, and in which- Figure 1 is a front view of a mail-box provided with my improvement; Fig. 2, a side view thereof partially in section, and Fig. 3 a perspective view of the attachment removed from the box.
In the drawings forming part of this specification I have shown at a an ordinary mailbox, and this mail-box is preferably of the form employed in apartment-houses, hotels, and similar places and is provided with a speaking-tube attachment 0, and a push-button attachment a but these attachments form no part of my invention and may or may not be employed.
In the practice of my invention 1 provide a mail-holding attachment designed for use as a receiver or holder for mail-packages which cannot be inserted into the box, and this attachment consists of a frame or suitable upright member 17, at the bottom of which are backwardly-directed rods 19 which pass into the bottom portion of the box, through the front wall thereof, as shown at c, and mounted on the rods 1) are springs 01, which bear on the front wall of the box and are held on the rods by collars or caps e, secured to the inner ends thereof, and the operation of the springs cl is to hold the frame or upright member I) pressed against the front of the box, as shown in Fig. 2.
Connected with the frame or upright member b of the attachment, 'at bottom thereof, is a forwardly-directed handle member b and in practice the frame or upright member I) of the attachment will be drawn outwardly against theoperation of the springs d, and the mail-packages are placed back of said member I? and will rest on the rods 19 and will be held in position by the springs d and may be removed by the mail collector when the mail-matter is removed from the box a.
In the form of construction shown the upright frame or member I) is composed of a stifi wire or rod bent into a yoke-shaped form, V
and the rods 1) are formed integrally therewith, and the handle member 6 is provided with a cross-rod b, which is connected with the frame member I) at the bottom thereof; but my invention is not limited to the exact form and construction of the parts 1), b and b and any suitable upright device provided with a bottom or top handle may be employed.
In the form of construction described I have shown my attachment applied to the front of the mail-box; but it will be apparent that the said attachment may be applied to the side of the box, and the operation will be same as that herein described.
Having fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. The combination with a mail-box, of an upright frame member movably attached to the front of the box and provided at its lower end with rods which extend into the bottom portion of the mail-box and. provided at their inner ends with collars, and springs mounted on said rods between said collars and the front of the box and adapted to hold said upright member normally against the front of the box, substantially as shown and described.
2. The combination with a mail-box, of an upright frame member movably attached to I said rods between said collars and the front my invention I have signed my name, in presof the box and adapted to hold said upright ence of the subscribing witnesses, this 10th member normally against the front of the box, day of April, 1903.
and a handle portion connected with the bot- JOHN J. SULLIVAN. 5 tom of the upright member, substantially as Witnesses:
