Be it known that I, CHARLES E. CARLL, a

citizen of the United States, residing at Indianapolis, in the county of Marion and State 5 of Indiana, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Ears, of which the following is a specification.

' The object of this invention relates to an improvement in ears which will be simple and inexpensive to manufacture.

This invention is particularly applicable for securing a wire or cord to hang or suspend articles of every description.

The object consists, further, in providing an ear which will be most particularly adapted to be used in the manufacture of metal pails for anchoring the handles, the adaptation and utilization of my improved ear be- 2o ing illustrated in the accompanying drawings,

which are made a part hereof, and on which similar numerals of reference indicate similar parts.

Fig. 3 is a side view of the construction shown in Fig. 1. Fig. 4 is a side elevation of acoman enlarged scale, and also shows in dotted lines the shape of the stud before being operated on. Fig. 5 is a modified construction in longitudinal section of the ear, in which a sleeve is slipped over the 35 neck of the ear; and Fig. 6 is a perspective view of the ornamental head that adorns the sleeve.

In the drawings, 1 is which forms the ear;

the neck of the stud 2, an enlarged base The neck 1 is inserted through an aperture in the article to which the stud is secured. The stud after being inserted through the aperture in the article is then placed into a punchof the stud resting on the tail-block of the press, which prevents dis placement of the stud. The press contains a die-plate which carries an aperture that 15 of somewhat less diameter than the diameter of the stud l. The descent of the die-plate over the neck 1 shears the periphery of the neck, andhence leaves it of a'less diameter than before. The shavings or refuse metal of the neck, caused by shearing the same, is carried along in front of the die-plate until said plate reaches the surface of the article, when the shavings are compressed into one massround the base of the stud 1. The shavings when compressed form the shoulder 3, which prevents the stud 1 from becoming loose.

Utilizing my stud or ear ina bucket for anchoring the handle, the shoulder 3, heretofore described, seals the space surrounding the neck 1 and prevents leakage. After the shoulder-3 is formed the end of the stud 1 is formed in a head 4., which prevents any displacement of the wire or cord 5 employed to support the article. Thus it will be seen that I have an ear formed of one piece of material, carrying a shoulder on each side of the article to which it is .fixed, as well as having the head 4 formed on the outer end.

In Figs. 5 and 6 of the drawings I have shown a modified construction of my improved ear. In this instance I force a sleeve 6 over the protruding neck 1. The sleeve 6 firmly engages with the neck and is provided with a head 7, which performs the same function as the head 4., heretofore described. The head 7 on the sleeve 6 is preferably embellished with any suitable design or configuration.

Having thus fully described my said invention, what I desire to secure by Letters Patent is-- v In a means for attaching bails to metal pails,

an ear composed of a cylindrical neck having one end formed in a base, a shoulder integral with the'ear, and a removable head'- oarrying sleeve adapted to slip over and firmly engage with the ear, the head preventing the displacement of the bail or other supporting medium.
