Specification of Letters Patent.
Application filed May 5, 1911.
To all 'whom t may concern:
Be it known that I, EMILIO F. BRUNELLO, a subject of the King of Italy, residing at Appalachia, in fthe county of Vise and State of Virginia, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Swords and Scabbards; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the saine.
This invention relates to swords and scabbards, and is especially adapted for use by officers and men of military fraternities and lodges.
An object of this invention is the provision of a sword and scabbard formed in sections, which may be readily disconnected and placed in a valise or trunk, thereby avoiding inconvenience to the traveler.
lith this and other objects in view, this invention resides in the novel features of construction, formations, combinations and arrangements of parts to be hereinafter moreA fully described, claimed and illustrated in the accompanying drawing, in which- Figure 1 is a side elevation of my invention; Fig. 2 is a vertical transverse crossed section thereof, and Figs. 3, 4, 5 and 6` are sectional views of different parts of my invention.
Referring to the drawing by characters of reference, the numeral 1 designates generally my improved sword and scabbard, of which 2 is the scabbard and 3 the sword. The scabbard is formed of two sections, 4 and 5, which, when secured together form a scabbard of ordinary appearance. The upper section 4 is formed wit-h extensions 6, of smaller diameter than the main portion thereof, which are adapted to be received in recesses in the inner wall of the lower section of the scabbard, thereby forming a secure joint between the sections. Springs 7 are secured to the inner wall of the upper section by screws 8, or any other suitable means, the lower ends of said springs projecting from the upper section, and are sprung outwardly, as at 9, and have lugs 10 formed on the ends thereof, for engagement with apertures 11, formed in the lower section of the scabbard, to hold the sections in positive engagement with each other. The sword 3 is also formed of two sections, 12 and 13, one of which is provided with a screw 14, for engagement with a threaded opening 15 in the other section.
The sections of the scabbard may be quickly and easily detached by forcing the lugs on the ends of the springs from the apertures, and when the sections of the sword are detached from each other, the different parts of the invention may be placed in a valise or trunk, and the traveler is thereby relieved from any annoyance in carrying the sword and scabbard.
Having thus fully described this invention, what I claim as new and'desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
1. A scabbard consisting of separable sections; one of said sections having longitudinal recesses in its inner wall at one end, parallel extensions on the end of the other scabbard section to engage in said recesses, and means carried by the latter section coacting with the iirst-named section to detachably lock said sections together.
2. A scabbard consisting of separable sections, one of said sections having longitudinal recesses in its inner wall at dia1ne rically opposite points, the other of said sec-- tions being provided with reduced longitudinal extensions to t into said recesses of the iirst-named section, and opposed spring arms secured at one of their ends to the lat,- ter section and provided upon their other ends with studs, said part named section having apertures in its wall inwardly of said recesses to receive said studs and lock said sections together.
