No. 848,821. i
Specification of Letters Patent. f
Patented April 2, 1907.
Application filed .l une 7, 1906. Serial No. 320,614.
To all 'whom t may concern;
Be it known that I, OSCAR F. GLIDDEN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Grand Rapids, in the county of Kent and State of Michigan, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in fading-Boots and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
My invention relates to improvements in wading-boots and analogous articles g and its object is to provide the same with convenient means for placing the same upon the person of the wearer or-removing the same, to pro vide convenient means for lowering the front or rear upper portion of the same, and to provide the device with various new and useful features hereinafter more fully described, and particularly pointed out in the claims, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure l'is aside elevation of a device embodying my invention as it appears when in position for use Fig. 2, the-same with the front ulpper portion lowered, and Fig. 3 a plan view o the upper margin of the structure.
Like numbers refer to like parts in all of the figures.
1 is the foot portion; 2, oneof the leg portions of the structure, of which there are two, one to receive each leg and foot of the user.
These leg portions are" extended upward,
joined in the form of trousers, and thence ex-l tended upward to surround the waist of the wearer. Inserted in the upper part of this structure, at each side, and extending from the upper edge or waistband down to a point about opposite tofwhere the two leg portions are joined ,to formthe body portion ofthe structure is a substantially triangular gusset.-
or gore 5, whereby the front upper portion 3 and the rear upper portion 3a are connectedintegrally, the seams being cemented-with rubber or otherwise lmade impervious to water. Each gusset `is adapted lto fold upon itself substantially along a line extending from the apex tov about the middle -of the upper edge of the` same, and thus permits the front and rear ortions 3' and 3*:l of the body ortion to be rought together around'the ody of the wearer. forms a trousers-like garment with integral foot portions, and being made of waterproof material, such as cloth fabric coated with The structure thus rubber or otherwise made impervious to waf ter, presents Aa surface having no openlngs thereinbelow the top edge through which the same are provided with fastenings which may consist of any convenient means, the
form shown being buttons and buttonholes, as
follows: Buttons 7 and buttonholes S are provided near the upper corners of the gussets, which serve to secure the front and rear portions in close relation to each other about the body, with the gussets folded upon themselves and extendmg inward toward each other between the body of the wearer and the front portion 3. lVhvere the folded edges of these gussets come in close relation at the front of the wearer, they are provided with any suitable connecting means, the form shown being a strap 11, attached to one gusset, and a button 9, attached to this strap and adapted to engage a buttonhole 10 in the other gusset. The rear `portion 3** and the upper rear portion of each gusset may thus be secured aroundthe body, leaving the front portion of each gusset, to ether with the front portion 3 of the outer abrio, free to be lowered, as occasion may require, as indicated in Fig. 2. v
Other buttons l2 at the rear afford attachment for the rear ends of Suspenders, and buttons 13 on the rear portion' of the gussets afford attachment for one front end of each suspender, `the other front end of each suspender being attached to the .front portion 3 y means of button 14. Thus while the front p'ortion of the gussets and the front 3 are'lowered the Suspenders will support the remainderof the garment. In like manner by detaehing the Suspenders from the buttons 13 and 12 and releasing the buttons 7 and l0" the rear portion 3a may be lowered as occasion requires. By releasing the buttons 7 andQ `the upper portion'of the garment will open out to the full extent of the gussets, and
thus permit of easily placingthe device upon' the person or removing the same, as occasion requires.
I have shown my device in the form of a boot structure at the lower part but obvl- IOC IIO
ously the same may terminate in any other` i convenient foot-covering, such es e sock or stocking, in form without-departing from my invention', which consists, essentially, of the described upper portion of the structure.
I claiin- 1. An integral garment comprising foot,
leg :ind body members formed of iniiterial their upper edges at the top of the garment.
2. Vv'anling-boots, comprising foot, leg and )or e iers. orme( 'n Uf: im z ri lr. l lym inl ,f li tgril, i Ihn ng zi top opening only, l'oldzi-ble gussets :it the respective sides of the body members, detachable means for securing the upper :ingles of each gusset to eachother, :ind detachable body members, formed integral, and having :i top opening only, the body member being provided :it euch side with :i foldable gusset connecting the front und rear ortions thereof, und adept-ed to fold neer e, middle und extend within the body member to near each other nt the middle of their, upper edges, means for detziehably securing the front sind rear portions of the body member in close rclation, zind means lor attaching suspenders lo the bod)T member and to the rea-r portions of the gussets.
In testimony whereof I ail'ix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
