To all 'whom it'may concern:
Be it known vthat I, ALICE HARDING BUT- LER, a citizen lof :the United States, and Ia resident of Evanston, in the lcounty of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented certainv new and useful Improvements in Garments, of whichthe following is a specification.
rIhis invention relates to improvementsin wearing apparel, and particularly to thatA classof clothing known as overallsg and while it is mainly and. especially intended `for the use of children, particularly boys,
rIhe principal object of the invention is -to provide a garment of the above mentioned general character which shall be simple and inexpensive in construction, strong', durable, and so made that it can be easily placed on the child or person for wear and use, or removed when` desired. Also,so that a certain portion of the garment may be easily attached to or detached from the slip-over or supporting eXtension thereof, which eX-' tension is used for Asupporting the garment on the shoulders of the wearer. 4
Other objects andl advantages of the invent-ion, will be'disclosed in the subjoined description and explanation.
In the accompanying drawing which serves to illustrate an embodiment of the invention,
Figure 1, is a front or face View of the invention embodied in a pair of overalls.
Fig.- 2, is a rear view thereof showing a portion of the seat flap detached from the front portion of the garment and from the rear portion of the supporting extension and Fig. 3, is a planv sectional view taken on line 3-3 of Fig. 2, looking in the direction indicated by the arrows, showing" the construction of and the manner of securing the side edges of the upper portion of the seat flap to the front portion of the garment and l to the rear lower portion of the supporting extension thereof.
Like numerals of reference refer to corresponding parts throughout the different views of the drawing.
In the present instance, the arment is shown as a bifurcated one, or in tie form of form without departing from the spirit of the invention'. The numerals 4 designatev the leg portions ofthe overalls which may be made ofany suitable size length and inat'erialiand after any desired pattern, but in 4the present case they aie illustrated, and in 'andv 6 sewed together fromy the crotch to the-upper portion of the front and rear portions respectively of the opening 8 in Athe supporting extension 9 of the garment, so as a pair of overalls but it 'isl apparent thatthe lower portion of the garment may be of skirt 7,0 Y `to permit the shoulders and body 'oflthe wearer to occupy the spa-ce between the'fi'ont Y yportionjl() and bac-k portion 11 of said supporting extension.
l Byreference to Fig. 2, of the drawing, it will vbe seen thatthe supporting extension 9,
is provided near its lower rear portion with i a number' of` button headed studs 12 which areadapted to engage socket piecesA 13 arrangedon the inner surface of the upper port-ion of the seat lap 14:, which is 'free from the sides'of the legs downwardly to a suitable point from the Waist portion of the garment as at 15, so that when it yis desired the seat flap 14e, may be attached to the rear lower portion of the supporting extension S),
or readily detached therefrom, in order that the seat flap 14 may be'dropped down and outwardly on about a horizontal line from its connection, as at 15, with the outer portion of the legs 4e ofthe garment. The vbutton headed studs 12 and the 'sockets 13 therefor, shown, are of substantially the same construction as those used for fastening gloves, but I desire it to be understood that any kind of fastening devices may be employed 'for connecting the 'supporting eX- tension 9 near its free end to the upper portion of thewaist part of the garment, without departure from the invention.
near its free end, and the seat fiap has on the outer surface ofthe uppeixport'ronofwach of its sides a stud 12 to engage a socket piece 13 one of which is secured to the inner surface of the front portion of the garment The seat Hap 14, is by preference some# what wider than the width of the` extension 9- ioe i near each side thereof 'and at about its Waist portion as will be readily understood by reference to Figs. 2 and 3 of the drawing.
While I have shown the garment as being made of two equalsized portions 5 and 6 i which are united together by means of longitudinal and vertical seams 16, yet. I desire to be understood that do not Wish to be limited to such construction, as the garment may be otherwise made, or so that the supporting extension 9 may be of a single piece, yet having an opening 8 through which the head and neck of the wearer is projected whenthe Igarment is placed in position on the body of the wearer for use, said opening forming shoulder straps 17 to rest on the shoulders and to support the garment. The supporting extension 9 may be a continuous piece or extension from the front portion of the upper partof the garment, and is by preference so made, yet it is obvious that itmay be sewed or otherwise attached to the front upper or rear upper portion of the garment with an opening 8, as shown, and yet be within the province of my invention.
From the foregoing and by reference to the drawing it will be readily understood and clearly seen, that by my improvements a very comfortable, useful, and serviceable garment or pair of overalls will be afforded,
in which a child may be readily clothed by simply placing the legs or lower portion of l the garment on the cliil'd and by then placing the supporting flap over the head ofthe child and then fastening the seat 4flap to the lower free portion of the supporting extension.- ll'hen the garment is thus in position on the wearer it is obvious that the shoulder straps 1T will rest on the shoulders and securely and comfortably support the garment.- The seat flap la is by preference provided with a fold 21 (see Fig. :2) at each of its side edges near the vupper portion thereof, and as before stated this flap is somewhat wider than the width of the free portion of the supporting extension so that the flap may be extended around the side of the waist of the wearer, and fastened by means of the fastening devices 1Q and 13,
or otherwise, to the front portion ofthe garment at about the waist line thereof.
Havingthus fully described my invention, what l claim as ne i and desire to secure by Letters Patent is- As an improved article of manufacture, a garment consisting of two single pieces of the same conguration, each 'of said pieces having an extension at its front and rear upper portions, the lower portion of each piece being folded upon itself and the edges thereof sewed together to form coverings for portions ofthe legs of the wearer, the said sewed portions being located on the adjacent sides of the leg coverings and united at their upper ends to form a crotch, the extensions of the rear upper portions of the leg portions being projected upwardly to about the waistline of the wearer and sewed together at their adjacent edges to form a seat-flap, the said extensions of the upper part of the other pieces being projected upwardly therefrom and sewed together at the lower part of their adjacent front edges, then formed to lie over the shoulders of the wearer to form a support for the garment, then extended downwardlyand sewed together at their lower meeting edges, `the last named extensions having au elongated opening between their adjacent edges, said opening being contracted at each of its ends and so located that one of its contracted portions will be in the front of the wearer and the other contracted portion at the rear of the wearer, the said last named or supporting extensions having one of their ends free, and means to detachably connect said free portion thereof to the upper portion of the seatflap.
