Specification of Letters Patent.

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known thalLLVl ILLIAM Gr. Luwr, a citizen of the United States, residing at 296 Lark street, Albany, New York, have invented certain new and useful improvements in Match- Boxes; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the figures of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.

The object of my invention is to provide a new and improved match box or safe that can be opened sufficiently to remove the matches and as thus conditioned hung upon the wall and left open or closed, as may seem expedicut, and one which in opening will not open far enough to spill the matches under any circumstances.

In the drawings, Figure 1 shows a front elevation of my box or safe closed and ready to hang upon the wall; Fig. 2, a similar view thereof, showing the box open and exposing the matches to view and so they can be taken from the box; Fig. 3, an edge elevation thereof, showing the box closed; Fig. 4, a similar view showing the box open, and Fig. 5 a vertical sectional view showing the construction.

The material of which the box is composed may be of thin wood, paper, or other material, and said box is made in two sections, an outer open-ended box or shell 4, into which slides the closed-ended box or match-container 2.

Upon the back or bottom of box 2 is affixed a strip of tough paper or other material, fabric, if preferred, as seen at 1, and this strip may run the whole length of the back and be formed into the loop 6 and the end of the strip affixed to the rear face of the outer shell, as seen at 6 in Fig. 5, or the strip may be made in two or more pieces, as shown in Fig. 5, if preferred, thus saving material by so doing. The strip is so arranged that when the box 2 is fully inserted in shell 4 the strip 1 bends or folds into the loop 6, as seen in Fig. 3, the end 6 being attached to the rear outer face of shell 4., and when the box 2 is drawn partly out of the shell 4 the loop is drawn out taut, as seen at 6 in Fig. 5, and prevents the box 2 from being drawn farther out of the shell, and this opening of the box is so regulated and governed by the strip 6 that it can open only so far as to allow matches to be taken from the box, but not far enough to allow them to spill out of the same. As hereinbefore said, the strips 1 and 6 may be one and the same strip, if desired. it hen the box is closed, the strip 6 folds and forms the loop 6.

When desired, the box as a whole may be hung on the wall by means of a simple hole in the strip 1, or the strip may be folded back so as to lie against the outer rear surface of the shell 4 or may be tucked in between the shell and the bottom of the box, when the box can then be carried in the pocket without any liability of the matches getting out of the box.

Having described my invention, so that those skilled in the art may know how to make and use the same, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-

As a new article of manufacture a receptacle consisting of a plurality of sections one sliding within the other; a loop as 6 attached at one of its ends to the inner section and at the other end to the other section and arranged to lie as a loop outside of both sections and at the end thereof when in its inoperative position and inside the outer section when in its operative position, one of the sections having a perforated projecting piece arranged to hang the sections as a whole substantially as described.
