To ALL WHoM IT MAY eoNeERN; i
'Be it known that I, HENRY C. GRIGGS, of Waterbury, in the county of New Haven, and State of Connecticut, have invented a. new Improvement in Buckles; and I do hereby decl-are the following, when taken in connection with the accompanying drawings, and the letters of reference markedr thereon, to be a full, clear,
. and exact description of the same, and which said drawings constitute part of this specification, and repre sent, in'- Eigure 1, a top view of the buckle complete.
Figures 2, 3, and 4, the three parts detached.
This invention relates to an improvement in three-part buckles, such as, are commonly used for shoe or hoopsl irt`buckles, the object being to strengthen the buckle; and I The invention consists in forming a. broad bar across the frame, and forming a recess in the said bar, so as to hinge the tongue thereto, and in the same bar other independent recesses, to receive and hinge each end of the loop.
To enable others to construct my improvement, I will proceed to describe the same as illustrated in the accompanying drawings. I I
The frame A, as represented in g. 2, is formed from one piece of metal, with the bar Bextending across from end to end of the frame, and formed in the same piece with the frame, and leaving a suflcient space, C,
upon one side, and D upon the other side of the bar, to receive and tuck the strap. vThrough the said bar B, I
form a space, E, so as to form a hinging-bar, d, for the tongue, and, at each end of the bar d, I form another perforation, a, to form a hinging-point,f, for the loop, thus leaving a connection, n, in the bar B, between the perforation a and the space E. F is the tongue, which is formed from a'plate of meta-l, one edge, y, heingof nearly the same length as the space C inthe frame, while the oth er edge, 7L, corresponds in length to the space E in the bar B, so that the edge k may be bent around the bar d, as seen in g. 1, and form the hinge for the tongue. I, the loop, is formed from wire, or other suitable material, each end of which is bent' around the part f of the bar,so as to -form a hinge for the said loop in the frame. A
Heretofore this class of buckles has been constructed without the connection n, there being two bars formed in the frame, the one for hinging the bar, to which the tongue and loop are both hinged, the other to support the tongue, butin this construction the hinging-bar ha'sbeen found too weak to sustain the stra-in which is many times forced upon it, but by the connection at, which Ihave made, or rather forming the hinging and supportingbar as' one bar, I have, in a great degree, strengthened the buckle, and in nowise added to the expense of manufacture.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new and useful, andi'desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
A buckle-frame, constructed with the bar4 B, when the said bar B is perforated, as at a a and E, so as' to form hinging-pointsff and d, and the connection-sin n, so as to receive and support the tongue F, and loop I, in the manner-'substantially as herein set forth'l HENRY C. GRIGGS.
