vIIVIPRGVBl/[ENT IN WINDOWfSASH FASTENERS.

T0 ALL WHOM Il MAY CONGERN:
Bc it knownthat I, ROBERT BATES, of Cohasset, in the county of Norfolk, and State of Massachusetts, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Sash-Fasts; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanyingdrawings, and tothe letters `of referencemarked thereon.
The natureof my invention consists in the peculiar construction of the parts of a sash-fast. The objects ofthe improvement are, first, to give a better hearing for the latch to swing on; and, second, to so simplify the construction ofthe catch and its housing that the parts can be cast and rvput together without drilling or riveting. The exact nature of.my invention cannot be readily undorstoodcxcept by reference to the drawings and specification. i l l To enable others skilled in the art to make and use my invention, I will proceed to describe its construction and use. In the drawings- Figure l shows in perspective one of my fasts as it appears on the sashcs.
Figure 2 isa. vertical section through the same. i
Figure 3 is a perspective, showing the plate H and spindle D, to which the latch C, figs. 1 and 2, is attached.
Figure 4 is a plan, looking from beneath, ofthe catch-housing K and the catch L.
Figure 5 is a plan of the same, looking from above, a part of the housing being represented as broken away.
The general fea-tures of my sash-fast are 4quite similar to thoseof the fasts in common use, and therefore do not need particular description.
H represents a. bed-plate, to he made secure to the lower har of the upper sash by means of wood-screws. Upon this bed-plate is the standard D, figs. 1 and 3. The standard D is enlarged near its base by the fillet d, figs. 2 and 3. This fillet forms a bearing for the lower end of the barrel C ofthe latch C, iig. 2. By forming the standar-(1D with the llet d, I have a convenient space for the spring S, iig. 2, between the lower bearing d and the upper bearing c of the latch-barrel G. I, iig. 2, is a washer, riveted to the standard by the rivet E, which serves to hold C C in position. The object of the spring S is to throw the latch C back, when not held Y bythe catch L, fig. 1. Upon examination of the drawings it will he seen that the hearings c d are at thc,-
extreme points of the barrel C', so that Ii'secure all the advantages of a long bearing, and yet have a convenisnt cavity for the spring S.
The second part of my invention relates to the' device for the c onstructionio'f the catch L and housing K The housing K, shown' in perspective in fig. 1, in plan, bottom side up, in iig. 4, and in plan ing. 5, with; 'part represented as 'broken out, `is cast in the form represented. M is a projection from the inside ofthe wall of the housing, and ts into amotcli, N, in the catch L, as shown in iigs. 4 and 5, thus forming a pivot, upon which the catch L swings. The catch L has a projection, N, figs. 4 and 5, extending towards the walls of the housing, so-that the catch cannot get out of place, that is, be slipped clear from the projection M, upon which it swings. S is a Spring, sustained in position by projections P P', cast upon the inner wall of the housing. Theusc of allthcse parts is so well known as not-to require further description. f
I do not claim as my invention the latch C,the catch L, nor the combination.
What claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is`
1. yThe combination and arrangement ofthe standard D, the fillet d, and barrel C7, made substantially as described, and for the purpose set forth. v
2. The housing K, cast with the projection M, substantially as V(lescril3edand for the purpose set forth.
ROBERT BATES.
