IMPROVEMENT-IN FARM-GATES.
-...aww-
4 The Schedule referred to in these Letters Patent and making part of the same We, JOSEPH lH.-l\IURPHr and` PATRICK J. MUR` PHY, of Abingdon, in the county of Knox, and State oi Illinois, have invented certain Improvements in Farm-Gates, of' which the following is a specification.
VlVat'u/reimd Objecfs of the Invention. Ourinvention relates to a simple methodof hanging farm-gates; and
i lower end of said 'rail, and forming a pivot on which the gate swings,1the upper end ofthe gate being held by an eye-bolt.
Description of `the Accompanying Drawings.
Figure 1 is a perspective view of our gate, with the lower end of the side rail cut away, to show the interior. v
Figure 2 is a perspective view ofthe metallic support for thelower end `of the gate.
General Descriptimt.
A is an ordinary gate-post, with projecting bases,
post A, and is secured thereto by bolts or pins through theholes e e e e.
A hole is bored in the lower end of the rail B, corresponding with the journal V.
The lower end of the rail B is represented as cut away, to show its position on the journalV, with the base of the rail resting on the top of the cylinder T.
The top of the rail B is secured to the post A by the eye-bolt C, the eye of which enoircles the roundtopped rail B, and the shank passes through the post A, and is securedby a nut.
Many efforts haveibeen made to devise a method for hanging gates, combining the vmaximum of usefulness with the minimumfof cost. 'Our improvement possesses these desirable qualities vin .an eminent degree. The use of hinges is obviated, it is not liable to get out of order, and, by its general simplicity of parts, economy is secured.
The gate swinging on the cylindrical pin V, inserted in the wood of rail B, and the bottom of 'rail B being truly tted, and resting on the'cylinder T, a complete protection4 against the corroding influence of the weather is secured, and, at the same time, -the entrance of dirt, 85o., to the journal or Working part o the swinging device of the gate, is prevented. l
We claim as our invention-a The plate S, constructed, as 'shown and described,
with cylindrical projections T and V, in combination with rail B, eye-bolt O, and` post A,.the whole arranged to operate substantially as and for the purpose specified.
, JOSEPH H. MURPHY. Witnesses.: PATRICK J. MURPHY.
