i N0. TQM. r Patented Sep. 19,1871;
UNITED n STATES WILLIAM HATHAWAY, OF NORTHBRIDGE, MASSACHUSETTS.
IMPROVEMENT l-N GATES.
Speciication forming part of Letters Patent No. 119,141, dated September 19, 1871.
To all whom it may concern:
Beit known that I, WILLIAM HATHAWAY, of Northbridge, in the county of Worcester and State of Massachusetts, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Gates; and I do hereby side elevation of my improved gate. Fig. 2 is a modification of the hinge arrangement, and Fig. 3 is a vertical cross-section of the gate taken on the line .r :r of Fig. l.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts.
A is the hinge-post; B is the latch-post; G is the gate composed of the top rail D, bottom rail E, ends F G', and slat rails H I. The hinge-post A hasa projecting cap piece, J, and projecting ear K. The end of the top rail rests on the cap J, and lower rail rests on the ear K, and the pintle L of the hinge passes through the whole, as seen in the drawing. The hinge is formed in this manner, which allows the gate to swing in either direction while supporting. it in the most substantial manner. Tenons on the end pieces F Gr pass through the top and bottom rails, and the intermediate slat rails H I are mortised through the ends. M is a cap on the latch-post with a recess thereinfor receiving the oatchN in the end oI the rail D. 0 is a latch piece which receives the slat-rail H. This passes through a long mortise in end piece F so that it can be moved up and down therein, and play is given it at the other end, as indicated by dotted lines, which allows of that motion. This rail is thus arranged for and opcrates as a latch. y The construction and arrangement are so plainly shown in the drawing that further description isdeemed unnecessary.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- The arrangement of the cap J, ear K, pintle L, cap M, catch N, and gate C, when constructed substantially as and for the purposes described.
WILLIAM HATHAWAY.
