THOMAS N. LUPTON, OF WINCHESTER, VIRGINIA.
SHUTTER-WORKER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 252,784, dated January 24, 1882.
V Application filed August 1, 1881. (ModeL) To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, THoMAs N. LUPTON, of
Winchester, in the county of Frederick and State of Virginia, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Shutter-Workers; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the construction and operation of the same, reference being bad to the annexed drawings, making a part of this specification, in which Figure l is a view of a horizontal section through the window-facing and shutter on a line with the top of the lower hinge, showing the manner of applying my invention to use; and Figs. 2, 3, 4, 5, and 6 are detail views of the several parts of the device.
My invention relates to shutter-workers for moving and locking an outside shutter from inside the sash; and the improvement consists in certain peculiarities of construction and arran gement, as hereinafter described and claimed.
A represents the side facing of a window, with a recess, a, cut across it, and of sufficient depth and width to receive and support a horizontal bar by which the shutter is to be operated.
B is the shutter-hinge, whichis of ordinary constructiomexcept that the upper edge of the section which is secured to the shutter Q is provided with an upright pin, E, upon which the outer end of the bar or rod F is pivoted. This bar F is provided with a pin, G, at its longitudinal center, which fits in a longitudinal guide-slot, M, in a plate, N, which is to be secured in the recess (I, either above or below the bar F. The inner end of the bar F is pivoted to a short arm, H, which corresponds nearly in length with the distance between the pin E and the center or pivot ot' the hinge B, and which is connected loosely to the pintle'b of the crank-lever J, which pintle is secured in the bottom ofa casing, K. This casing contains the arm H, and is designed to fit closely over the recess a inside of the sash, to close the opening formed by the recess. The casin g has a segmental shape at its inner end, and is covered by a cap which is provided with upwardprojecting lugs c, with which the lever J is adapted to engage, and by which it is held in any desired position and the shutter conveniently adjusted.
With this construction, when the knob ot' the leverJ is drawn inward the bar F is forced outward with a reciprocating oscillating movement, causing the shutter to open, in which position it may be held by pressing the lever down behind one. of the lugs 0. By thrusting the knob outward or toward the sash the bar Fis drawn inward and the shutter closed and locked by means of the outer lug, c. It is necessary that the lever should have a slightamount of vertical play in order that it may be lifted over the lugs when operating the bar F.
With this construction the shutter may be opened or closed and secured without opening or raising the sash, and it may also be adjusted so as to be held partially open when desired.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim is 1. The combination, with the shutter G and binge B, having a pin, E,on the section which is secured to the shutter, of the bar F, pivoted to the said hinge and provided with a central pin, G, the longitudinally-slotted plateN in engagement with pin G, the arm H, pivoted to the inner end of bar F, and the crank-lever J, connected to said arm and adapted to en gage with lugs c on the upper face of the casing K, substantiallyas shown and described.
2. In combination with the bar F and shutter 0, the casing K, adapted for being secured over the recess it inside the sash, and supporting the crank-lever J and arm H by means of a pintle secured to its bottom, and covered by a segmental cap having lugs c, with which the lever is adapted to engage, substantially as shown and described.
THOMAS NEILL LUPTON.
