PATENT Cri ic's.
TROLLlNG-SPOON.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 730,064, dated June 2, 1903.
Application filed April 1'1, 1902.
T0 aZZ whom it may concern."
Be it known that I, ALBERT WING WILSON, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of San Francisco, in the county of San Francisco and State of California, have invented a new and Improved Trolling-Spoon, of which the following is a full, clear, and exactdescription.
The object of this invention is to improve the means for connecting the hooks with the spoon and swivel. Heretofore this connec tion has been efiected by means of two split rings, one attached to the forward end of the spoon and carrying the swivel and the link and the other ring attached to the end of the link and carrying the hooks. This construction is faulty, owing to the weakness of the split rings and owing also to the difficulty of assembling the parts and the expense of producing the split rings.
By means of my invention a connectinglink is provided which may be cheaply produced and very easily applied to the spoon, so as to hold the hooks properly and with much greater'strength than in the old construction referred to.
This specification is an exact description of one example of myinvention, while the claims define the actual scope thereof.
Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, in which similar characters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the views.
' Figure 1 is a plan view of the invention. Fig. 2 is a view showing the connecting-link bent to produce its two eyes. Fig. 3 shows the same device with the clamp thereon; and Fig. t shows the link with the clamp and the shank or middle part. of the link Wrapped with silk, after which it is painted, producing the neat and regular effect shown in Fig. 1.
a indicates the spoon, and b the hooks. c is the swivel, to which isconnected the line d. The link, as shown best in Figs. 2, 3, and 4., is formed of an integral section of preferably bronze wire. This is bent to produce the two eyes 6 and f, and the ends of the wire are laid back alongside of the middle portion. After this has been done the parts are held snugly together by means of the clamp g, here shown in the form of a length of wire Serial No. 102,785. (No model.)
wrapped around the middle part and the two ends of the bronze wire forming the link.
After this has been done the shank of the link is snugly wrapped with silk or other cord, as indicated at h in Fig. 4, and in the finished device this cord is carefully painted, thus producing a uniform and attractive appearance, as indicated at h in Fig. 1. The eye e of the shank is passed through the opening a of the spoon, and the eye is also passed through the adjacent end of the swivel c. The eyef is connected with the hooks b. In small devices it may be convenient to employ a split ringv for this purpose, as shown in Fig. 1; but-in large devices, where strength is an important factor, the eyes'of the hooks are preferably connected directly with the eye f. The eyes 6 andfof the shank are engaged with their respective coasting parts when the shank is partly formed,'as in Fig. 2, and then the steps illustrated in Figs. 3 and 4 are performed. Now it will be observed that this arrangement wholly dispenses with the split rings at the ends of the link.
In Fig. 11 have shown thesplit ring 1'; but this is not essential in any case, and it is distinctly inadvisable in the case of large spoons, in which considerable strength is necessary.
Various changes in the form and details of my invention may be resorted to at will without departing from the spirit of my invention. Hence I consider myself entitled to all forms of the invention as may be within the intent of my claims. f I
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- 1. A link for fishing-gear, said link comprising a section of wire bent to form two eyes respectively at the ends of the link, the end portions of the wire being projected past each other and laid back alongside of the middle portion, a clamp fastening said end portions snugly against the middle portions, said end and middle portions of the wire forming the shank of the link, and a covering inclosing said shank and extendin'g'continnously from one eye to the other. r
2. A link for fishing-gear, said link being formed of a length of wire bent to produce an eye at each end of the link, the end p01 7 tions of the wire being laid alongside of the name to this specification in the presence of middle portion to form the shank of the link, two subscribing witnesses. a clamp einbi'aein said end and middle por- 4 T tions of the wire, and a covering for the shank, ALBERT (1 WILSON 5 the covering extending continuously from eye Witnesses:
GEO. M. MITCHELL,
to eye.
In testimony whereof I have signed my ORENIA B. WILSON.
