COAT AND HAT HQOOK.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No.-41'7,128, dated December 10, 1889.
Application filed March 15, 1889. Serial No. 303,410. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, GRANVILLE W. Water-1r, of New Haven, in the county of New Haven and State of Connecticut, have invented a new Improvement in Coat and Hatllooks; and I do hereby declare the following, when taken in connection with the accompanying drawings and the letters of reference marked thereon, to be a full, clear, and exact description of the same, and which said drawings constitute part of this specification and repsent, in-
Figure 1, aperspeetive view of the hook com lete' Fig. 2 a )ers ective view of the 9 7 base and screw detached; Fig. 3, a transverse section cutting through the base and hook below the screw looking upward.
This invention relates to an improvement in that class of coat. and hat hooks which consists of two hooks arranged one above the other, combined with a single base by which said hooks are secured, the upper or longer hook intended for a hat and the lower or shorter one for coats or other articles of wearing apparel, and particularly that class of coat and hat hooks which are formed from wire, the object of the invention being to provide the hooks with a base constructed with a screw as an integral part of the base, by which the hooks are secured and supported; and it consists in the construction, as hereinafter described, and particularly recited in the claim.
The two hooks A B and the body of the hook are made from a single piece of wire. The wire is doubled to form the hook A and so as to form two branches 0. a, which converge from the end of the hook. A second similar double is made from the opposite end of the wire to form the hook B, producing two branches 1) I), also converging from the end of the hook, the wire which forms the two hooks being continued on one side to form an upright (J, and the two ends brought together to form the other upright D, and so that the two ends meet in the said upright 13. These uprights are preferably parallel and near each other.
The base E is of rectangular shape, made from malleable metal, of a width so much greater than the distance between the uprights 0 D as to permit the edges of the base to be closed around the said uprights. The screw F is made asan integral part of the base and so as to project at right angles therefrom, as seen in Fig. 2. This screw and base may be cast complete of malleable metal. The head E is placed at the back of the uprights and the edges turned over said uprights and closed thereon, so as to securely bind them to the base and hold them in the desired position relatively to each other, and forms a very strong support for the hooks. By this construction the wire hook is produced with the screw as a permanent part thereof.
I am aware that coat and hat hooks have been made from wire with a base attached, by means of which the hook can be secured; and I am also aware that such hooks made from wire, having a screw formed as an integral part thereof, are well known. I therefore do not wish to be understood as claiming, broadly, a coat and hat hook made from wire provided with a screw by means of which it may be secured, the essential feature of my invention being: making the base as a clip, to embrace the branches of the wire, with the screw formed as an integral part of that base, and as hereinafter particularly recited.
I claim- The herein-described coat and hat hook, in which the two hooks are formed from' a single piece of wire bent to form hooks A B and uprights C D, combined with a cast malleable metal base E and screw F, said screw and base made integral, said base closed around said uprights, substantially as described.
GRANVILLE W. WRIGHT.
