Be it known that I, lViLLIAM E. Borne, a citizen of the United States, residing at Beebe, in the county of White and State of Arkansas, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Fence-Wire Joints, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to a fence-wire joint and more particularly to a device for coupling together the ends of the strands of wire which constitute a wire fence.
The primary object of the invention is to provide a pair of complementary interlocking members to which the meeting ends of the fencewire may be attached for coupling the wires together thereby preventing the same from becoming accidentally disconnected.
A further object of this invention is the provision of a fence-wire joint which consists of comparatively few parts and is simple in construction, but durable and well adapted to withstand the rough usage to which devices of this character are ordinarilv subjected.
For a full description of the invention and the advantages and merits thereof, reference is to be had to the following description and the accompanying drawings, wherein is illustrated the preferred form of my invention, in which:
Figure 1 is a side elevation of the coupling showing the same connected to the ends of two strands of wire.
Fig. 2 is an edge view thereof.
Fig. 3 is a section on the line 33 of Fig. 2.
Fig. 1 is a detail plan of one of the complementary members.
Fig. 5 is a detail section on the line 5-5 of Fig. 4:.
The two interlocking members which compose the coupling are identical in formation and for the purpose of this description only one of the members will be described in detail. By referring to Fig. 4, wherein is illustrated one of the coupling members, it will be noted that a shank 1 is provided which comprises a substantially thick member having an enlarged end 2 the extreme terminal of which is bent upon itself to provide the bead 3. An aperture 4 is formed in the enlarged end 2 and receives one end of a wire strand A which is passed around the bead 3 and tied in a loop as shown by Figs. 1 and 2 of the drawing. The opposite end of the Specification of Letters Patent.

shank 1 is reduced in thickness and increased in width to provide the plate 5 having its side edges bent upwardly and curved as at 6 where it is extended over the top of the plate 5 and slightly spaced therefrom to provide the retaining flanges 7. Each of the curved edges 6 are cut away to provide the longitudinally extending slots 8 extending from the forward end of the plate and terminating mid-way between the ends of the side edges as clearly shown by Figs. 1 and 5.
In assembling the complementary memhere together to form the coupling, the flanges 7 of each member will be passed through the space between the flanges and the top of the corresponding plate 5, the edges 6 ofeach member fitting into the slot 8 in the adjacent member so that the coupling, when in assembled position, has the appearance of that shown in Figs. 1 and 2 of the drawing.
After the ends of the wire have been at- I tached to each complementary member and the coupling portions thereof placed in operative engagement, it will be impossible to disengage the members until the wire has been severed or disconnected from the end of either one or the other of the members.
From the foregoing it will be observed that a very simple and durable fence-wire joint has been provided, the details of which embody the preferred form. I desire it to be understood however, that slight changes in the minor details of construction may be made without departing from the spirit of the invention or the scope of the claims hereunto appended.
I claim:
1. A fence-Wire joint comprising a pair of complementary coupling members, a relatively wide plate carried by one end of each member, the opposite edges of each plate being bent and curved and having cut-out portions extending half the length of each edge, the said curved edge of each member adapted to be disposed in the said cut-out portion of the corresponding member for interlocking the ends of the said members.
2. A fence-wire joint comprising a pair of complementary coupling members, a relatively wide plate carried by one end of each member, the opposite edges of each plate being bent and curved and having cut-out portions extending half the length of each edge, the said curved edge of each member adapted to be disposed in the said cut-out portion of the corresponding member for interlocking the ends of the said members, and extensions formed on the said curved edges and in spaced relation to the said plate, the said extensions of each member being dispo-sedwin the said spaces of the adjacent member when in interlocked engagement.
3. A. fence-wire coupling member comprising a shank having its end provided with a relatively wide plate, retaining flanges carried by and overlying the plate and providing spaces between the surfaces of the plate and the said retaining flanges, the said flanges of each corresponding member adapted to be disposed in the said spaces for holding the ends of each member in interlocked engagement.
4. A fence-wire joint comprising a pair of complementary members, each having a shank, means for attaching a Wire to one end of the shank, a coupling element formed on the end of each shank, comprising a pair of flanges spaced apart at their edges whereby the shank of each corresponding member may be disposed between the said flanges, a relatively Wide plate integrally formed with the shank and having its edges connected to the said retaining flanges whereby the said flanges will be disposed in spaced relation to the plate, the said retaining flanges and the edges of the plate being cut away to provide a slot for permitting the interlocking of the said flanges in the said spaces in each corresponding member.
