Description
' UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
JOHN CONRAD BASEL, OF GALVESTON, TEXAS.
SPLICING DEVICE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 401,244, dated April 9, 1889. Application filed October 15, 1338. Serial No. 288,165. (No model.)
To all whom it 11mg concern.-
Be it known that 1, JOHN CONRAD BASEL,
a citizen of the United States, residing at Galveston, in the county of Galveston and State of Texas, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Splicing Devices; and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters and figures of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
My invention relates to splicing devices for joining the adjacent ends. of distinct Wires; and its objects are, first, to make a perfect joinder between the wires without interweaving; second, to disjoin the adjacent termini of the wires at will; third, to make the joint weather-proof and not liable to disjoinder by corrosion; fourth, to provide readily for making a permanent joinder when desired without interweaving the wires, and, fifth, to attain these ends with structural simplicity and economy. I accomplish these ends by means and in the manner illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure 1 represents an elevation of my invention adapted for a permanent joint. Fig. 2 is a central longitudinal section of the same. Fig. 3 is a central longitudinal section of the form of my invention when a temporary joint is desired. Figs. 4 and 5 indicate the respective modes of bending the termini of the wire according as a temporary or permanent joinder is to be effected, and Fig. (3 is acrosssection of the construction shown in Fig. l.
The same designations indicate corresponding parts in the several views.
A represents a casing, of metal or other suit able material, with closed sides and open ends, and a represents the adjacent ends of two wires which enter the casing, respectively, at each end and on opposite sides, their ends being bent, respectively, up and down, so as to interlock, as at b and b. When the ends of the wire are so arranged, I bend the ends of the casing down close around the protruding wires, as at B, thereby closing the ends and excluding dirt and moisture.
In Fig. 3 I have shown a modified form of interlocking the ends, as at c and c.
l-Iavingthus described my invention, What I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. The combination, with the adjacent ends of two wires bent so as to interlock, of a casing, as A, surrounding said ends and having its ends bent in, as at B, substantially as described.
2. The combination, with the casing A, of the wires a a, entering the casing at the opposite sides of the respective ends and bent in opposite directions, so as to interlock within the casing, said casing being bent down, as at B, at each end, substantially as described.
In testimony whereof I aflix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
JOHN CONRAD BASEL.
