Description

No. 70,357.' Y Patented 0M. 28, |902. C. F. BREY.
VIOLIN CASE.

UNITED STATES PATENT` OFFICE.
CLARENCE F. BREY, CF PHILADELPHIA, PENNSYLVANIA.
VIO LIN-CASE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 712,357, dated October 28, 1902.
i `Application filed April 15, 1902. Serial No. 103,020. (No model lo all whom t may concern:
Be it known that I, CLARENCE F. BREY, a citizen of the United States. residingr at Philadelphia, in. the county of Philadelphia and State of Pennsylvania, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Violin-Cases, ofV which the following is a specification.
Myinvention relates to the permanent connection to the outside of a violin-caseof a receptacle for sheet-music wherein it can be placed without being rolled `up or in any way defaced while the case is being carried about, the same being hereinafter described, and illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which Figure l is an outer view of the lower side of a violin-case having connected thereto a closed receptacle into which sheets of music can be inserted and removed therefrom as occasion may require. Fig. 2 represents an end view of the violin-case, showing overfolded end of the receptacle and means for locking it. Fig. 3 is a sectional Vview of the receptacle placed in the case on line xx, Fig. l. Fig. 4 is a perspective view of portions of the violin-case having receptacle with its Y overlapping end uplifted, showing opening into whichmusic-sheets can be inserted and withdrawn, sheets of music being represent-v ed as partially introduced through saidopen end.
The case may be of the usual shape and size, but in order to embody my invention must have connected to its under side a sheet of soft leather extending from the broad end of the case toward the center thereof,as shiown at A in the accompanying drawings.' Its edges are flush with the edges of the case,. but it is somewhat widerthanthe surface of said case in order to provide a receptacleffor insertion of sheets of music. Said sheet A' may be riveted or blindseamed to the surface of the case along its marginal lines a or connected thereto by anysuitable mechanism without extending within the case proper.
The broad end of the music-receptacle has a folding cap B. (Shown closed in Fig. 1 and lifted up in Fig. 4.) To fasten said end cap when closed, it is provided with a button b, which is inserted within a perforated tag b',
secu red to the broad end of the case, as shown closed in Fig. 2 and open in Fig. 4:.
The object of my device will be readily understood by all familiar with the line of art to which it appertains. It provides means for carrying sheet-music without its being folded or rolled up in a separate parcel as now in common use. Although I have confined my description and illustrated it in the drawings as applied to a violin-case, it can also be used on all kinds of stringed instruments of larger size and be within the scope of my invention.
What I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States, is-
A violin-case having connected to its outer surface, a sheet of leather, extending from `its broad end toward the center thereof and fastened to said surface alongits outer marginal lines, to forrnja receptacle for sheets of music, the receptacle having at its end a folding ,cap with fastening-button for connecting it to a` perforated tag on the broad end of the case, substantially as described.
In testimony whereof I have signed my name to this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
