Appli catl qnfiled Septeinberlfl, 1923. Serial No. 661,804.
This invention relates to'tool containers,
and more particularly to the portable variety for carrying a set of tools such as em ployed, for example, by carpenters, having 5 as its chief object the provision of a sim 1e,
and practical container of this character or a set of tools combined with one of the tools such forexample as a brace in-such a way that the latter is securely held partially within the container when the latter is closed with its handle serving as a convenient handle for the container also, but is released for use when the container is opened. 7
To these and other ends the invention con- 5 sists in certain improvements and combinations of parts, all as will be hereinafter more fully described, the novel features being pointed out in the claims at the end of the specification.
In the drawin s: Figure 1 is a side elevation of a container and brace embodying the present invention; Figure 2 is a plan view of the same with the brace in section;
Figure 3 is a transverse sectional elevation on the line 3*3 in Figure 2, and
Figure 4 is a fragmentary detail View of a portion of the container.
Similar reference numerals throughout the :10 several views indicate the same parts.
The embodiment of the invention herein disclosed by way of illustration comprises, preferably, a simple rectangular container constructed in the present instance of sheet metal in separable parts or halves 5 and 6, as shown, hinged together at the bottom of the container as at 7 so that they may be swung apart at the opposite side to afford full access to the interior. The halves are of equal width in the present instance, although this may be varied if so desired,,and the sides are preferably ribbed or channeled as at 8 to afford increased stiifness.- The corners and edges may also be reinforced by caps 9 as shown, to take the wear and stiffen the body at these portions. Suitable means are provided for securing the halves together in closed position, to which end the top of the side 6 preferably has an opening 10 cut therein (Fi 'ure 4) through which is passed and pivotal ly engaged a hasp 11 fitting over a staple or catch 12 on the other container half 5, and a suit-able lock 13 may be provided for locking the parts together after being closed.
' The practical and economical form of container described above has combined therewith a brace of the usual variety in such a manner that the brace is securely fixed to the container when the latter is closed and carried partly inside the same, with the crank handle of the brace, however, disposed conveniently above the central top portion of the container to serve as a handle for the latter also; To this end one or both of the container parts has the 'meetingcdge thereof at the top of the container recessed'as at 14, (Figure'2) to receive the shank'15 of the brace on opposite sides of the crankhandle 15 thereof; When the container brace, and also its chuck portion 18 are dis? posed within the container while the crank handle of the brace projects in spaced re lation outside the container to afford a convenient handle for the container.
As soon as the container is opened, of course, the brace is released, but with the parts locked inthe assembled relation shown it is impossible to detach the brace. The latter is thus carried with its pad and chuck portions protected within the container, and with its crank handle forming a substantial and convenient handle for the container. The brace is arranged to occupy a minimum of space and is so combined with the construction of'the container as to afford a very simple and economical equipment.
I claim as my invention:
1. In a tool container, the combination of a brace having a crank handle intermediate its breast pad and chuck, and a container having separate parts including oppositely disposed aligned edge portions adapted to be closed about the shank'of said brace with said pad and chuck thereof inside the container and said brace handle outside the container serving as a handle for the container, said brace being entirely supported by said aligned edge portions when the container is closed and free to drop away from the same upon opening the container.
2. In a tool container, the combination of a brace having a crankhandle intermediate its breast pad and. chuck, and a container comprising parts hinged at one side to open at the other, the adjacent edges of said open side bein recessed to receive the the brace. shank with the pad and chuck thereof inside the container and the crank handle thereof outside the container to serve as a handle for the latter said brace being entirely supported by said adjacent edges when the container is closed and being freed thereby upon opening the container.
3. In a device of the class described, the combination of a handle having a bowed central portion and oppositely extending portions aligned with said central portion and a container provided with relatively movable sections having adjacently disposed edge portions extending in a common plane one of which is notched to receive the oppositely extending end portions of said handle whereby they are adapted to extend beneath and into direct supporting enga ement with one of said sections, said handle being free to drop away from said sections upon separation of said edge portions.
