GEORGE SEELMAN, JR., OF MILWAUKEE, WISCONSIN.
ran Ann HOLDER.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Dec. as, rare.
Application filed February 6,1915. Serial No. 6,439.
To all whom it may concern 7 Be it known that I, GEORGE SEELMAN, Jr., a citizen of the United States, and resident of Milwaukee, in the county of Milwaukee and State of Wisconsin, have invented new i and useful Improvements in Pads and Holders, of which the following is a description, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, which are a part of this specification. j
Thisinvention relates to improvements in pad and holder more particularly although not solely used for desk use.
Ordinarily desk pads consist of holders provided with pads of sheet paper which are torn off as written upon and in making notes upon the sheets of paper it is customary to tear off the whole sheet for each item whether or not the item fills up the said This obviously wastes considerable paper. Also in making notes of one subject matter on several sheetsof paper some of the sheets may become misplaced or lost E nd he ordinary pads are furthermore objectionable due to the fact that in using a new pad the writing surface of the pad is comparatively at an inconvenient writing distance above the desk and this distance constantly changes until all of the sheets of paper are removed. The ordinary desk pad is not of ornate appearance and does not add to the general appearance of the desk upon which it is used.
vention to overcome the before mentioned objectionable features and provide a pad and holder in which the holder is adapted to carry a rollof pad paper under cover and which maybe easily drawn out to a position for use and then separated from the roll in a very simple manner.
A, further object of the invention is to provide a pad and holder having means for placing the portion of the paper being withdrawn from the roll of paper under tension to prevent the too rapid unwinding of the roll of paper and also to provide for retaining the pulled out portion of the paper in smooth position for writing thereon.
A further object of the invention is to provide a pad and holder in which the writing face of the pad is arranged at an incline to form a more convenient writing surface and is always at the same distance above the It is one of the objects of the present ini A further object of the invention is to provide a pad and holder in which the roll holder is easily accessible for removing or replacing rolls of paper, and the rolls of paper are so journaled within the holder as to be easily revolved in unwinding paper therefrom.
A further object of the invention is to provide a pad and holder having compartments for holding paper fasteners, rubber bands, pins, etc.
A further object of the invention is to provide a pad and holder which is of simple construction. is strong and durable and is well adapted for the purpose described.
VJith the above and other objects in view the invention consists of the improved pad and holder and its parts and combinations as set forth in the claims, and all equivalents thereof.
In the accompanying drawing in which the same reference characters indicate the same parts in all of the views: Figure l is a side view of the improved pad and holder, the cover of the paper roll being indicated in open position by dotted lines; Fig. 2 is a top view thereof with portions broken away to show interior construction; Fig. 3 is a longitudinal sectional view thereof taken on line 33 of Fig. 2; and Fig. 4- is a transverse sectional view taken on line 4% of Fig. 1, the compartment cover being indicated in open position by dotted line.
eferring to the drawing the numeral 7 indicates the casing of the improved pad and holder and it comprises the base or bottom wall 8. the tapered side walls 9, the end wall 10, the inclined top cover 11 and the curved roll top cover 12. The parts just enumerated form an inclosure which is divided by transverse walls 13 and 14 into a roll compartment 15 and other compartments 16 and 16 for holding miscellaneous articles such as pins, rubber bands, paper i fasteners, etc. The cover or inclined top 11 is hinged to the side of the casing by a continuous flexible hinge 17 so that access to the compartments may be had by opening the cover.
The inner side portions of the casing forming the end walls of the roll compartment 15 are reinforced or thickened as indicated by the numeral 18 and these portions are provided with inclined elongated grooves 19 extending from the upper rear peripheral edges of the reinforced portions downwardly and forwardly at an incline to the centers of said portions to accommodate the end portions of the roll rod or axle 20. The elongated grooves are arranged at an angle as shown so that the pull on the roll of paper 21 in unwinding portions therefrom will have a tendency to prevent the rod from accidentally jumping out oi. the lower bearing ends 19 of the elongated grooves 19. The curved roll top cover 12 is hinged to the end wall 10 of the casing by a flexible hinge 22 and at its diametrically opposite edge is provided with an angular strip 23 extending transversely of the casing. This angular strip is formed of spring metal and when the roll cover is in closed position the strip is adapted to rest upon the strip of paper 21 which has been unwound from the roll 21 and pulled out of the roll compartment between the strip and the inclined top or cover 11 of the casing and serves as a tension to prevent the paper from pulling out too easily. The roll cover is locked in closed position by means of straps 24 which are fastened to said cover and at their free end portions have an ordinary button snap engagement 25 with the side walls of the casing; The free end portions 25 of the straps extend below the button snaps to provide means for easily unlocking the parts.
The strip of paper pulled out from the holder compartment rests flat upon the inclined cover, which forms the writing surface or pad, and at the lower end of the cover the paper passes beneath. a trans versely extending strap 26 which holds the paper in position for writing thereon and which also is the means for severing the used ortion from the main portion, the severin! operation being accomplished by pulling the end of the strip upwardly at an angle againstthe lower cutting edge 26 of the strap 26.
The inclined cover or top 11 is locked in closed position by the roll cover 12 which, when in closed position. extends over the upper end portion of said top 11 and holds the same in closed position.
The rod or shaft 20 loosely extends through the bore of the roll of paper so that when all of the paper has been unwound from the roll a new roll may be easily mounted on the rod and replaced in the roll compartment.
From the foregoing description it will be seen that the pad and holder always preserves the paper in position to be written upon in a convenient inclined position and is otherwise well adapted for the purpose described. I
l/V hat I claim as my invention is:
1. A writing tablet for roll paper comprising a casing provided with a roll compartment and another compartment, both of said compartments having open tops,
a cover for the roll compartment, a cover for the other compartment forming a fwriting platen, a tension strip carried by sald cover and coiiperatmg therewith to secure the writing platen in closed position, a roll of paper revolubly mounted in said roll compartment and extending between the tension strip and the writing platen, and means for securing the cover forthe roll compartment in closed position. p
2. A writing tablet for roll paper comprising a casing provided with a'roll compartment and another compartment, both of said compartments having open tops, a cover for the roll compartment, a cover for the other compartment forming a writing platen, a tension strip carried by said cover and'cooperating therewith to secure the writing platen in closed position, a guiding and severing strap carried by saidplaten, a roll of paper revolubly mounted in said roll compartment and extending between the tension strip and said platen and between the I guiding strap and said platen, and means for securing'the cover for the roll compartment in closed position. v
3. A writing tablet for roll paper, comprising a casing provided with a roll compartment and another compartment, both of said compartments having open tops, a cover for the roll compartment, a cover for the other compartment forming a wrltlng platen,

5. A writing tablet for roll paper, comprising a casing provided with a roll compartment and another compartment, both of said compartments having open tops, a cover for the roll compartment, straps having button snaps for locking the roll compartment cover in closed position, an inclined cover for the other compartment forming a Writing platen, said roll compartment cover looking the inclined cover inclosed position, a holding and severing strap carried by the inclined cover and extending transversely thereof, a tension strip carried by the roll compartment cover and positioned to bear upon the platen, the end portions of the roll compartment having extending grooves therein, a rod slidably mounted in the grooves, and a roll of paper mounted on the rod and extending between the tension strip and the inclined cover and between the holding strap and the said inclined cover.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature, in presence of tWo Witnesses.
