Bc it' known that I, W. F. DAUGIIEnTY, of Mount Pleasant, in the county of llenry, and in the State of Iona, have invented a ncfwand useful improvement in Bed-Springs; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon, in Which- Figure 1 is a plan view, and n u Figure 2 is a side elevation.

The nature of xnyvinvention consists in the manner' of attaching the springs to the cross-bars, and of letting said cross-bar, into the additional side rails, and of inserting a link between the spring and the catch-hook on the ends of thespring-bars, as hereinafter fully described.

To enable others skilled in the art to make and use my invention, I will proceed to describe its construc- -tion and operation. .t

' In the construction of my invention, in iig. 1', A the additional side rail, which has a socket cut into it, as seen at d a a a in said figure, and which rail is rmly screwed, by four screws at each end, to the side rail of the ubedstead.` The spring-bar or cross-bnr is B B, through which the lower projecting ends of the springs C C pass, and which are turned over at right angles, onthe lower side of the said har, and clinched, and in the rear or outside of it, thus giving rigidity to the position of the spring. The springs are regularly coiled, as is common to` .springs of this class, through which passes a rod, D D, which rod rests on blocks I) Iz, resting on spring-bars B B, und which all combine to keep thesprings securely in their place. The upper und inner ends of the springs rise, inclining inward, about two-thirds the length of the spring, and to which is attached thc clevis part of the spring -E E, and is, on itsinner-face side, attached'to a hook, c c, irmly riveted to the under side of the spring-bars or bed-bottom d ddd. When the bottom is thus constructed, the cross-bars B B arc pushed down into the sockets a a a a in the side rail A A, Where it ts snugly and firmly, and is now ready for use. Y

In the operation of my invention, it'will be seen that, from the manner in which my springs are coiled and braced, the pressure is equally distributed through the whole spring, and it cannot rise or become deranged in its operation. It will be further'seen that, by means of the clevis, a greatly improved motion Vis given to the spring-bottom. As 'the pressure is placed on the bottom, the clevis is pressed down, if suiiicient weight be applied, to a. vertical position, thus causing thebottom to.sink equally the whole length of the slat, thus giving u regular motion to the bed-bottom. By the addition of the clevis I am enabled to give an easy, regular motion 4to the entire bottom. Also, by the use of the elevis and hook, I can with ease attach and detach the bottom or any part of the same. i

Having thus fully described the construction and operation of my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-

-The clevis E, asv constructed and arranged, in combination with the spring C and hook c, substantially as described, and operating as set forth.
