IMPROVEMENT IN SPRING BED-BOTTOMS.

Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 197,116, dated November 13, 1877; application filed July 19, 1877.

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, O. L. FULLER, of Marseilles, in the county of La Salle and State of Illinois, have invented certain new. and useful Improvements in Spring Bed-Bottoms and I do hereby declare that the following" is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, which will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.

This invention relates to certain improvements .in spring bed-bottoms; and consists in the special construction and arrangement of parts, which will be hereinafter more fully set forth.

In order to enable others skilled in the art to which my invention appertains to make and use the same, I will now proceed to describe its construction and arrangement, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, which form a part of this specification, and in which Figure 1 is a top view, Fig. 2is a side elevation, and Fig. 3 shows a portion, of a spring detached; also, the manner of fastening the and around each side wire, as shown, and so on, until they reach the other side, when they are fastened to the top wire of the spring in any suitable manner. This arrangement prevents the springs from sliding about, as is the case when they are fastened in the manner heretofore practiced.

The slats A are held together by transversely-arranged slats (land 1). The slat O is placed under the slats A at the head of the bed, and the slat D on top at the foot, as shown. s

To the longitudinal slats E are secured transverse slats-F and G. The spring B of the slat F is secured to the slat C under the slats A, and the spring B of the slat G is secured to the slat D on top of said slats A. By this arrangement the head of the bed is, by the same sized spring as that of the plat Gr, elevated somewhat higher than the oot.

To the slats E are also secured slats H and I. The slat I is arranged near the center of the bed, and the slat H placed between the slat I and the slat F. The springs B of these slats are secured directly to the slats A, as shown.

The slats F, H, and I are provided with a spring, B, at the crossing of each slat A, and the slats G with two springs, B, one at each corner of the foot.

By this arrangement of thesprings the upper portion of the bed conforms to the body, the center is prevented from settling, the bed given an incline, and all combined to carry the weight and allow of the vibration without the tendency to slip toward the foot of the bed.

The lower part of the spring is made square and the end extended down. This construction gives the spring a bearing-surface on the slat. The end, after being passed through the slat, is clinched diagonally across the square, as shown in Fig. 3 of the drawings.

Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is

1. Ina spring bed-bottom, the slats A, held together at the head by a slat, O, placed underneath, and at the foot by a slat, D, placed on top, in combination with the slats E F G and their springs B, substantially as described.

2. The combination of the slats A C D, and their springs B, with the slats H I, and their springs B, arranged on the slats E, between the slats F G and their springs, substantially as described, and for the purpose set forth.

3. The spring bed-botto1n hereinbefore described, having springs B, provided with a square seat or bottom, and fastened to the slat by clinching the end of the spring at ri ht angles with the square or seat, substanti lly as described.
