Description

S. HOLMAN.
SPRING BED-BOTTOM. No. 178,776.- 7 Patented JuneIS, 1876.
N-PETERS. PNOTO-LITHDGRAFHEE, WASKINGYON, D, C.
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
SULLIVAN HOLMAN, OF DETROIT, MICHIGAN, ASSIGNOR OF ONE-HALF HIS RIGHT TO CARLTON H. MILLS AND WM. E. BARKER, OF SAME PLACE.
IMPROVEMENT IN SPRING BEDV-BOTTOMS.
' Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. l7S,776, dated J one 13, 1876; application filed July 15, 1874.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, SULLIVAN HOLMAN, of Detroit, in the county of Wayne and State of Michigan,.have invented an Improvement in Spring Bed-Bottoms, of which the following is a specification The nature of this invention relates to an improvement in that class of spring bed-bottoms wherein flexible wooden slats are supported by spiral springs mounted on the crossslats ot' the frame; and its object is to obviate the difficulty heretofore experienced in such bed-bottoms by the great depression of bottom plan of the slatsand their straps and ties.
In the drawing, A A represent two longitudinal slats, on which are 'mounted three cross-bars, B, to which the bases of the spiral conical springs O are secured. D are longitudinal slats of any kind, of tough and elastic wood, coupled together in pairs by short transverse tie-plates a, secured to their under sides, each tie-plate resting on, and secured to, the
top of a spring by ascrew, rivet, or otherwise.
12 is astrap'of sheet metal, running across,
foot of the bed but- I prefer to tie the outer.
slats in groups of threo,-at the foot, by short straps 0, except the middle pair, which are connected by a shorter strap, 0. This arrange ment of the parts insures a broader base of support for a person lying 'on the bed, prevents the' depression of any one slat beyond or below the plane of the adjacent one,.while it allows the slats to conform readily to the outline of the superimposed weight.
The purpose of the long strap b is'to keep the pairs of slats in their relative positions at the head, while the straps c c servea like purpose at the foot.
What I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
A spring bed-bottom, consisting of the longitudinal slats A, cross-bars B, and springs (1, combined with the upper longitudinal slats D, united at the head by the single strap 1), at the foot by the straps c c, and in other portions of their. length in pairs by the straps'a, substantially as and for the purposes herein specified.
