CQrn'A Sheller,
4Patented Sept. 17. 1867.
@uitrit tetes gement @Hire CHRISTIAN H. BRADYOF MOUNT JOY. PENNSYLVANIA, ASSIGNOR TO HIMSELF AND WILLIAM BRADY.
Letters Patent No. 68,941, dated September 1I, 1867; antedated Septemifer 1Q, 1867.'
IMPROVEMENT IN GORNLSHELLER.
.TO ALL WHOM IT MAY CONCERN:
Be it known that I, CHRISTIAN H. BRADY, of MountJoy, in the county of Irtnoaster` and in the State of Pennsylvania., have invented certain new` and usei'ul Improvements in Corn-Shellers; and do hereby declare that the followingis a full, clear, and exa-ct description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of' reference marked thereon. i
In the annexed drawinos, makino art of this s eciiication A represents an annular case or box 'which is.
. D D 7 i east hollon and in tWol parts, being divided in the line and centre of its periphery. The two parts oF tliisvcase have lugs upon them, through which bolts or rivets pass `to secure them together, and each part has an annular opening through its side.. This case has a spout cast upon its under edge, as seen at a, and also a. project-ion, b, which 'enters the socket oi' a standard, d, said standard being provided with a ange or arm, e, and a setscren',f, by means of which it isconfincd to a table or bench. Within the case A is a frame, B, which consists of two rimwheels, C C, confinedtogether by means of bolts 'D D, and separated hy means of four bars, E, E', the ends of whichI rest in sockets in the inside of the rims of thc wheels C C. The 'bars E E and E E are connected together hy the hars F F, and the bars F are connected` at their ends by the rods G'G. `I-I H represent the cast-metal plates, which are' formed hollon'ing at their centres, and have in these liollows the sections of a. coarse screw-thread cast. Upon each edge of' these plates the metal is partially'cut away between the outer thread and the one next to it, so as to vform a sharp tooth or point, as seen at AThe ends of th`ese plates have holes through them, and the rods G G pass through these holes so as to confine the plates with their hollowing sides to each other. l'.Ihese plates have pins m cast upon theirbacks, which pass through openings'n the centre of the bars F F, and coiled wire springs surround these pins, acting in one way against the plates, and in the other against the bars F, so as to keep the plates pressed tightly toward each other. The object of' these two plates is toeatch and hold the coh'of the ear of corn, while they at the 'same time give an endwise lnotiontofit and remove the grains of corn from it by means oi' the teeth it', which 4strike-the grains at 'their point ot' connection with the cob. Upon the rim-wheels C C are cast two arms, I I, and to .these arms are secured crank-handles for the purpose of' turning or revolving the frame B. Th'e frame B, us has before been stated, is placed `vithin the case A A, and its arms II, with their handles, project through the openings in the sides-of the case. i
When this machine 1s confined to a bench or table, and is ready` for use, the operator takes an ear of corn in his left hand, and turning the frame B with his right he inserts the small end of the ear between the plates H H.l The threads in the plates draw the ear while the teeth z'z' cut the grains oi of the cob by pressing against them near their junction with the cob. When the ear has passed about half through the plates, the operator seizes it withhis right hand; and turning the frame with his left completes the operation of shelling t'he corn off of the cob. i i
This is a. very handy little machine for family use, and one which'is durable and cheap.
What I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is,-
The combination of the revolving frame B, as constructed and provided with the spring-plates H H, with the stationary case A, provided with spout a and projection b,` as and for the purpose set forth.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing I have hereunto set my handthis 23d day of'August, 1867.
CHRIST. H. BRADY.
