Description

L. D. HOWARD.
Improvement in Rein-Holders for Carriages.
Patented May 7,1872.
PATENT Orrron LEONARD D. HOWARD OF ST. JOHNSBURY, VERMONT.
IMPROVEMENT lN RElN-HOLDERS FOR CARRIAGES.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 126,549, dated May 7, 1872.
Specification describing a certain Improvement in Rein-Holders for Carriages, invented by LEONARD D. HOWARD, of St. Johnsbury, in the county of Caledonia and State of Vermont.
This invention is intended to be attached to the dasher of a carriage and to receive and hold the reins when the driver desires to lay them down. It consists of a pair of serrated jaws pivoted to a plate and geared together so so as to work in unison, and combined with springs which cause them to gripe the reins.
Fig. 1 is a perspective view, and Fig. 2 a horizontal section.
The jaws aforesaid consist of serrated plates a, which, at their upper and lower ends and inner sides, have lugs 0, through which pass pins 0, by means of which the jaws are pivoted to a plate, f, at their lower ends, and, at their upper ends, to the tops h of cases 1, that are fastened to the plate f and inclose the jaws. Onthe lower ends of the jaws a are cast serrated cams a, which engage with each other, causing the jaws to move together. Inside the cases I are springs m wound around the pins 0 and bearing on the jaws a, so as to press them outward. The plate f has two spurs, j k, extending from its under side, by means of which the plate is secured to the dasher, one spur passing to each side of the same. When the reins are slipped between the jaws a the same yield to receive them, and then close upon and hold them firmly, under the action of the springs m. When the reins are removed the jaws fly outward till they are stopped by the cams 15 00min g in contact with the cases I, and stand inclined inward a narrow space being left between their edges, ready to again receive the reins.
1 claim as my invention- The rein-holder herein described, consisting of the plate f, serrated jaws a, toothed cams 6, cases I, and spurs j k, arranged as specified.
LEONARD D. HOWARD.
