JOHN TOLEN, OF MAUD, OKLAHOMA TERRITORY.
BREAST-STRAP.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented April 2, 1907.
Application filed September 19,1905. Serial No. 279.149.
To 11]] whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, J only TOLEN, a citizen of the United States, residin at Maud, in the county of Pottawatomie, Territory of Oklahoma, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Breast-Straps; and I do hereby declare the followin to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to harness attachments.
One object of the invention is to provide a harness attachment for connection with the breast-strap to permit of a free and easy movement of the traces.
Another object resides in the provision of an exceedingly simple, inexpensive, durable, and efficient roller attachment for connection with the breast-strap of harness to permit of a free and easy movement of the traces and to hold the double or swingle tree evenly with respect to the axle of the vehicle.
lVith these and other objects in view the present invention consists in the combination and arrangement of parts, as will be hereinafter more fully described, shown in the accompanying drawings, and more particularly pointed out in the appended claim, it being understood that changes in the form, proportion, size, and minor details may be made within the scope of the claim without departing from the spirit or sacrificing any of the advantages of the present invention.
In the drawings, Figure 1 is a top plan view of the structure. Fig. 2 is a section 011 line 2 2 of Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is a section on line 3 3 of Fig. 1. Fig. 1is an enlarged detailed view, in side elevation, of one of the U-shaped frames.
Referring now more particularly to the accompanying drawings, the reference character 1 designates a breast-strap to the outer face of which and intermediate its ends is sesured my improved attachment, which consists of spaced legs 2 and 3, each having a foot 1, provided with a perforation 5,through each of which latter and the breast-strap may pass a suitable rivet 6. Connecting the outer extremities of the legs 2 and 3 is a connecting portion 7, which is preferably wider than the width of the said legs 2 and 3, resulting in oppositely-disposed shoulders a at each end thereof.
Fitted between the legs 2 and 3 is a U- shaped frame 8, whose connecting bight portion 9 is provided with perforations 10, through which and the breast-strap may be passed suitable rivets 11 for the purpose of securing the U-shaped frame to the breaststrap between the legs 2 and 3. Each side member 12 of the'U-shaped frame has its opposite side edges 13 tapered toward each other and then directed parallel to each other, as indicated by the reference character 14. It will be noted that the portion of each side member 12 at which. the parallel side edges are formed is wider than the respective legs 2 and 3 and that each side portion is provided at its upper end with a bifurcation 15, resulting in the formation of fingers 16 and 17, designed to engage the aforesaid shoulders a of the connecting bight portion 7 of the legs 2 and 3.
Passed through the legs 2 and 3 and the said member 12 of the U-shaped frame is a fixed bolt 18, uponwhich is loosely mounted a roller 19, the said roller being midway between the connecting portion 7 of the legs 2 and 3 and the connecting portion 9 of the U-shaped frame, so that the bight portion 20 of the traces 21 and 22 may pass over said roller 19, and thereby reduce friction between the breast-strap and traces.
From the foregoing it will be understood that the bight portion of the traces may have a free and easy movement over the roller 19, thereby reducing friction to such an extent that the swingle or double'tree (not shown) may be held evenly with respect to the axle. (Not shown.) It is to be understood, too, that the traces may be formed of a single piece of material or provided with buckles.
WVhat is claimed is The combination, with a breast-strap, of a plurality of pairs of oppositely-disposed legs secured thereto strips connecting the outer ends of each pair of legs; a U-shaped frame secured to the breast-strap between each pair of legs, the side members of each frame In testimony whereof I afiix my signature having bifurcated outer ends, the fingers in presence of two Witnesses. formed thereby bemg adapted to embrace JOHN TOLEN the opposite ends of the connecting-strips;
5 a rod passed through each pair of legs and witnesses:
the side members of the corresponding frame; J. D. VVIsE, and a roller loosely mounted upon each rod. Gr. WV. RATLIFF.
