APPLICATION FILED MAY 2 1915.

TTED STATS AVERY PELHAM SHERRILL, OF STATESVILLE, NORTH CAROLINA.
BREAST-STRAP.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Mar. 1a, 1916.
Application filed May 28, 1915. Serial No. 31,056.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, AVERY P. SHERRILL, a citizen of the United States, residing at Statesville, in the county of Iredell, State of North Carolina, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Breast- Straps; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to improvements in harness, and particularly to breaststraps.
The principal object of the present invention is to provide a novel and simple device for connecting the hames and the neckyoke, which will take the place of the ordinary breast straps and chains.
Another object is to provide adevice of this character which will be strong and durable, and which can be more quickly and easily applied and removed than the ordinary straps and chains.
Other objects and advantages will be apparent from the following description when taken in connection with the accompanying drawing.
In the drawing: Figure 1 is a front elevation of a pair of hames with the invention applied. F ig. 2 is a side elevation'of the same. Fig. 3 is a perspective view of the breaststrap detached from the hames.
Referring particularly to the accompanying drawing, 10 represents the lower ends of a pair of hames in connection with which my improved breaststrap is used. The hames are provided with the usual rings 11 from which the ordinary chain or strap fasteners have been removed.
The improved breaststrap comprises a strip of wood, preferably hickory, because of its resiliency and its tenacity, said strip being represented by the reference character 12. Strips of strap iron 12 and 13 or other suitable metal is secured on the outer and inner faces of the wooden strip, the end portions of the latter strip being formed into loops 14L Engaged in these loops are the snap hooks 15, which are adapted for engagement with the before-mentioned rings 11 of the hames.
The device is approximately semicircular in shape and is passed under the lower ends of the hames so that its snap hooks can be quickly and easily engaged with the heme rings 11. With this device the neckyoke can be more quickly and easily connected with or disconnected from the hames than with the ordinary chains or straps, as there is no necessity of passing chains or straps through the rings of the hames, which is a slow and laborious proceeding on very cold ays.
It will thus be seen that the device is simple, cheap, and durable in its structure, and that it is extremely easy of operation. Furthermore, the device can be manufactured and sold at a much lower figure than the ordinary chains or straps, and will undoubtedly outlast either of the last-named.
What is claimed is:
A breaststrap comprising a strip of wood approximately semicircular in shape, metal strips secured to the inner and outer faces of the wooden strip, the portions of the inner metal strip at the ends of the wooden strip being formed into loops, and snap hooks secured in the said loops.
In testimony whereof, I aflix my signature, in the presence of two witnesses.
AVERY PELHAM SHEER-ILL.
