Description

PATENTED JUNE 25, 1907.
A. B. ALLEN.
TAIL HOLDER.
rrnromxon rum) APR.2,1906,
WITNESSES.-
[NVENTOR A TTORNE V5 ALLIE BROWN ALLEN, OF HATTIESBURG, MISSISSIPPI.
TAIL-HOLDER.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented June 25, 1907.
Application filed April 2, 1906. Serial No- 309,571-
I To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, ALLIE BROWN ALLEN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Hattiesburg, in the county of Perry and State of Mississippi, have invented a new and useful Tail-Holder, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to horse-tail holders or rein guards and has for its object to provide a comparatively simple, inexpensive and efiicient device of this character capable of being quickly attached to or detached from the harness and by means of which the tail of the horse is effectually prevented from getting over or entangled in the reins.
A further object of the invention is to generally improve and simplify this class of devices so as to increase their utility, durability and efficiency as well as to reduce the cost of manufacture.
, With these and other objects in view the invention consists in the construction and novel combination and arrangement of parts hereinafter fully described, and illustrated in the accompanying drawings, it being understood that various changes in form, proportions and minor details of construction may be resorted to within the scope of the appended claims.
In the accompanying drawings forming a part of this specification: Figure 1 is a perspective view of the device showing the same applied. Fig. 2 is a similar view showing the holder or guard detached.
Similar numerals of reference indicate corresponding parts in all of the figures of the drawings.
The improved device consists of a main supporting strap 5 preferably formed of a plurality of superposed lifts spaced apart at the free end of the strap by means of a block or strip 6 and a tail-piece 7 to form a vertically disposed slot or opening 8. Riveted or otherwise rigidly secured to one wall of the slot or opening 8 is a spring-clasp 9 adapted to embrace the lower end of the horses tail while spaced from said clasp and interposed between the lifts comprising the strap at a point adjacent the strip 6 is a similar clasp 10 adapted to engage the upper portion of the horses tail.
Secured to one end of the strap 5 is a transversely disposed loop or eye 11 adapted to receive the adjacent end of the back-band 12 and support the device in position on the harness. Slidably mounted between the Walls of the opening 8 is the intermediate portion of a retaining strap 13, the free ends of which are provided with buckles or suitable fastening devices 14 for detachable connection with the hip strap 15. The main supporting strap rests upon and is disposed parallel with the horses tail so as to prevent any raising or vertical movement of the same while the slotted portion of the strap permits the animal to switch or swing its tail laterally without danger of the tail getting under or entangled in the reins.
In positioning the holder on the animal the free end of the supporting strap is secured to the harness by inserting the adjacent end of the back-band strap in the loop 11, after which the tail of the horse is inserted between the spring clasps 9 and 10 and the retaining strap threaded through the slot or opening 8 and attached to the hip strap in the manner before stated. In order to detach the device it is merely necessary to re lease the back-strap and fastening devices 14 when the holder may be readily removed.
From the foregoing descri tion it will be seen that there is provide an extremely simple and inexpensive device admirably adapted for the attainment of the ends in view.
Having thus described the invention What is claimed is:
1. A tail-holder comprising a supporting strap for attachment to a harness and provided with fastening devices adapted to embrace a horses tail, and a flexible connection slidably mounted for vertical movement on the supporting strap and detachably secured to the harness.
2.- A tail-holder comprising a supporting strap forattachment to a harness and having a slot formed in one end thereof, spaced fastening devices secured to the strap and adapted to embrace a horses tail, and a retaining strap detachably secured to the harness and passing through the slot in the supporting strap.
3. A tail-holder comprising a supporting strap for attachment to a harness and having a slot formed in one end thereof, spring clasps secured to one Wall of the slot and adapted to embrace a horses tail, and a retaining strap having its intermediate portion slidably mounted for vertical movement between the walls of said slot and its terminal portions detachably secured to the harness.
4. A tail-holder comprising a supporting strap having a slot formed in one end thereof, spaced fastening devices carried by the strap and adapted to embrace a horses tail, a retaining strap having its intermediate portion slidably mounted for vertical movement in said slot and its free ends provided With fastening devices for detachable connection.
With the harness, and a loop secured to one end of the supporting strap for attachment to said harness.
5. A tail-holder comprising a supporting strap for attachment to a harness and formed of a plurality of superposed lifts spaced apart at one end of the strap to form a vertical slot, fastening devices secured to the interior Walls of the slot and adapted to embrace a horses tail, an attaching loop secured to one end of the supporting strap, and a retaining strap having its intermediate portion slidably mounted for vertical movement between the Walls of the slot and having its opposite ends provided with means for attachment to the harness.
6. A tail-holder comprising a supporting strap formed of a plurality of superposed lifts, a tail-piece interposed between the lifts at one end of the strap and defining a vertically disposed slot, spring-clasps carried by the supporting strap and adapted to embrace a horses tail, means carried by one end of the strap for engagement with the harness, and a retaining strap threaded through the slot in the supporting strap and having its opposite ends provided with means for engaging the harness.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my own, I have hereto aflixed my signature in the presence of tWo Witnesses.
