WBe it known that I, ISI-IAM G. FORRISTER, a citizen of the United States, residing at Versailles, in the county of Woodford and State of Kentucky, have invented new and useful Improvements in Rein-Holders, of which the following is a specification.

This invention relates to line holders or guards for application to harness to prevent lines or reins from falling over the hips and becoming caught under the tail of a horse.

The improved line or rein holder is designed particularly to be secured to the back-strap near the crupper-straps or over the point of intersection of the hip-straps with the backstrap.

The advantage of the improved holder or guard is that it may be readily applied without requiring any modification whatever'inthe form of ordinary harness and when a plied will remain in positive position. T 1e improved guard is also capable of use with several sets of harness, each having means to permit it to be readily secured in applied position and separated at will.

In the drawings, Figure 1 is a perspective view of the improved line or rein holder shown applied, the parts of the harness engaged by the holder being broken away. Fig. 2 is a transverse vertical section.

Similar numerals of reference are employed to indicate corresponding parts in the views.

The numeral 1 designates a base-support of suitable length, having an intermediate body 2, with under side flanges 3 to form a seat, and tongues 4 projecting in opposite directions from the said body. The tongues 4 extend downwardly from the opposite extremities of the body, and the latter is held elevated to fit over and receive under parts of harness with which it is adapted to engage. Extending transversely with respect to the body 2 of the base-support and rigidly connected thereto is a cross-support 5 with reduced extremities 6 struck upwardly and continued into inwardly-projecting horizontally-disposed loops 7, through which the reins or lines are adapted to be passed. The cross-support 5 at one side of the center is reduced in width and has outer stop-shoulders 8, and on said reduced portion of the crosssupport a box-loop 9 is freely movable and is adapted to fit over the free extremity of an under clasp 10, secured to the under side oi the opposite portion of the cross-support and projected across the seat formed by the flanges 3 of the body of the base-support. The clasp 10 is of a resilient nature and has at its free end a transverse abutment or shoulder 11, so that when the box-loop 9 is pushed over the free end of the clasp and engages the abutment or shoulder 11 accidental disengagement of the said clasp from the box-loop will be prevented.

In applying the holder or guard the body 2 of the base-support is disposed over the point of intersection of the back-strap 12, hipstraps 13, and the crupper strap 14, the tongues 4 bearing, respectively on the backstrap 12 and the crupper-stra 14. The portions of the straps over whic the body 2 is disposed lie within the seat formed by the side flanges 3, and the clasp 10 is inserted through the loop 15, carried by the backstrap 12, and through which also the hip straps oppositely extend or pass in the common form of harness. After the clasp 10 has thus been disposed it is secured by the boxloop 9, and the holder or guard as an entirety will thus be firmly and positively held in applied position.

The holder or guard as an entirety will be constructed of metal either of a bendable nature or having a permanent contour, and it may be colored as may be desired. An advantage will accrue by forming the holder or guard of bendable metal in shaping the same to compensate for variations in the contour of the backs and hips of various animals.

It is also proposed to vary the dimensions, proportions, and minor details of the several parts of the holder within the scope of the invention.

By elevating the guard at the center or at the point of intersection. of the base-support 1 and the cross-support 5 the thickness of the intersecting parts or straps of harness over which the said portion of the holder is disposed is accommodated, and the opposite portions of the cross-support, as well as the tongues 4, are permitted to bear closely on the straps with which they engage.

Having thus described the invention, what is claimed is 1. A rein or line holder having a longitudinal base-support, a cross-support el'igaging the base-support and formed with reduced extremities continued into inwardly-projecting horizontally disposed loops which are held at an elevation above the said cross-sup- IIO port, an under clasp secured at one extrem ity, and means for detachably securing the free extremity of said clasp.

2. A rein or line holder having oppositelydisposed rein-loops, and a clasp secured to the under portion thereof to removably engage a part of the harness. 3. A rein-holder having rein-loops, a resilient clasp extending across the under portion of the same and secured at one end, and means for detachably securing the free end of said clasp. V

4. A rein-holder having rein-loops and a lower longitudinally-extending seat, a clasp extending across the seat, and means for detachably securing one end of the clasp.

5. A rein-holder having a longitudinallydisposed base-rest formed with an under seat and tongues at its opposite extremities, a cross-support intersecting the base-rest and provided With reduced extremities continued into inwardly-projecting horizontally-disposed rein-loops, a clasp extending across the under portion of the base-rest, and a loop slidable on part of the cross-support to detachably engage one end of the clasp.
