APPLIOATION FILED JUNE 13, 1910.

firmness.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Sept. 6, 1910.
Application filed June 13, 1910. Serial No. 566,633.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, VILLIAM D. Barman MAN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Union, in the county of Union and State of Oregon, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Harness; and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to harness, and more particularly to harness of that character in which the back strap and saddle are dispensed with, as illustrated in the Patent #715,635, issued to Wm. D. Beidlem-an and E. G. Cameron, on which the present de vice is an improvement.
One object of my invention is to provide an improved harness that will be readily and easily adjustable upon the horse, and in which all the straps are suitably con nected to accommodate themselves ,to all movements of the animal.
Another object of my invention is to provide a light, free, and strong harness that will be loosely suspended upon the horse, and slidably connected to both the collar or hame and the belly band.
WVith these and other objects in view, the invention consists of certain novel features of construction, combination and arrangement of parts as will be more fully described and particularly pointed out in the appended claims.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a perspective view showing the application of my invention to a set of harness. Fig. 2 is a plan View of my improvements detached, and Fig. 3 is a detail sectional View through the collar cap.
Referring to the drawings, 1 represents the collar, 2 the hames, 3 the breeching, 4 one of the traces, and 5 the side straps of a set of harness embodying my present improvements.
In the practical embodiment of my invention, I employ a collar cap 6 adapted to lie upon the collar between the hames, and which is provided with spaced slots 7 through which is adapted to pass a suitable retaining strap carried by the hames or collar. Adjacent the rear extremity of the collar cap 6 is secured an elongated loop 8, through which freely slides a connecting strap or slide 9, which is preferably looped, as at 10, at each end, and provided with band.
suitable rings or buckles 11 in said loop. The connecting strap or slide is preferably of leather having a reduced and rounded central portion which is adapted to freely move within the elongated loop 8. To each of the rings or buckles 11 are secured the forward ends of the side straps 5, which intermediate their ends are reduced and rounded, as indicated at 12, to form a suitable slide, while the rear end of each of the side straps 5 are directly attached to the crupper 13. The slide, or rounded portion 12 of the side straps are adapted to slide freely within the upper loops 14: of the belly band 15. Loops 10 for the reception of the traces 1 are also carried by the belly Suitable rings or loops, as 17, are suitably positioned upon the breeching 3 to guide the side straps.
It will be apparent from the foregoing description that the side straps 11 are free to slide longitudinally within the loop 1% of the belly band and the rings 17 upon the breeching, while the connecting strap or slide 9 to the ends of which the side straps are attached, is free to slide laterally as required, thereby allowing the collar and breeching, as well as the side straps to accommodate themselves to the motion of the animal and preventing the collar from galling the shoulders. 'The entire harness is thus adapted to be freely suspended and fit comfortably upon the horse without danger of the several parts becoming accidentally displaced.
From the foregoing description taken in connection with the accompanying drawings, the construction and operation of the invention will be readily understood without requiring a more extended explanation.
Various changes in the form, proportion and the minor details of construction may be resorted to without departing from the principle or sacrificing any of the advantages of this invention as defined in the appended claims.
Having described my invention, I claim:
1. In harness, a belly band, a breeching, a collar cap, a connecting strap slidably secured thereto, side straps secured at the ends of the connecting strap, and means for loosely connecting the side straps to the belly band and breeching.
2. In harness, a belly band, a breeching, a collar cap, a loop carried thereby, a connecting strap slidable within said loop, side straps secured at their forward ends to the connecting strap and. a crupper secured to their rear ends, said side straps being also loosely connected to the belly band and breeching.
3. In harness, a belly band, a crupper, a collar cap having slots therein, means for securing the collar cap upon the collar through said slots, a loop carried by said cap, a connecting strap slidably mounted in said loop, and side straps secured at their forward ends to the connecting strap and at their rear ends to the crupper, and having intermediate their ends a rounded portion adapted to slide Within a loop carried by the belly band.
In testimony whereof I have hereunto set my hand in presence of two subscribing Witnesses.
\VILLIAM D. BEIDELMAN.
