IMPROVEMENT IN CARRIAGE-SPRINGS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 137,197, dated Mar-:11 26, 1873.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, CHARLES S. S. Gum FING, of Salem, in the county of Golumbiana and State of Ohio, have invented a certain Improvement on Carriage-Springs, of which the following is a specification:
The nature of my invention consists in the employment, in combination with elliptic carriage-springs, of two or'more guide-rods, arranged parallel to one another in vertical positions, in such a manner as to prevent all lateral movements of the spring in both vertical andhorizontal directions, which distinguishes my improvement,'broadly, from that class of elliptic carriage-sprin gs provided with but one such guide-rod,-which can only stop lateral The guide-rods are also encircled by tubular rubber springs, performing their usual functions in conjunction with the elliptic spring.
Figure 1 is an elevation of my improved carriagespring. Fig. 2 is a vertical transverse section thereof.
The same letters of reference are employed in both figures in the designation of identical parts.
The elliptic spring A is constructed in the usual manner, and fastened between the axle and bolster of the vehicle. To the upper halt of the spring are firmly secured two vertical parallel guide-rods, B B, by means of a plate, 0, or other suitable device. The guide-rods stand upon the side of the spring, as best seen in Fig. 2, and their lower ends are placed in elongated bearings DD suitably secured to the axle. These bearings are lined with Babbitt metal, or other non-frictional metal, to prevent the rapid wearing of the guide-rods, which must inevitably occur did the rods slide in iron sleeves. The rods should be placed about six inches apart, and each encircled by a tubular rubber spring, E, as shown.
What I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
An elliptic carriage-spring, A, in combination with the vertical guide-rods, two or more,
B B, elongated bearings D D, and rubber springs E, substantially as and for the purpose specified.
