Description
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
D. J. PEER, OF ROCHESTER, NEW YORK.
IMPROVEMENT IN DENTAL VULCANIZING-HEATERS.
Specication forming part of Letters Patent No. 53,666, dated April 3, 1866.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, D. J. PEER, of Rochester, in the county of Monroe and State of New York, have invented anew and useful method of Attaching Heads to Dentists Vulcanizing- Heaters; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, making part of this specification, in which- Figure l is a side elevation of my invention, a portion of the boiler A and of the head H being broken away to show the application of the clamping-bolts B. Fig. 2 is a detached inside view of the said bolts.
Like letters indicate like parts.
The object of this invention is to provide a very simple, efficient, and convenient mode of clamping the head of vulcanizing-heaters for dentists use; and it consists in making the bolts with a head or shoulder on the sides to fit under the projecting rim of the top of the heater, and hinging them to the body of the boiler or heater in such a manner as to swing off at the top suciently for the nut to clear the head when it is to be removed or replaced.
To enable others to make and use my in vention, I will describe its construction and operation.
I use the ordinary boiler or heater A, which is made of copper or other suitable material. In the top or upper edge I provide an annular groove, g, to receive the packing-ring r, and the head H has a projecting ring or follower, f, made to Iit properly in this groove.
There are two or more pairs of ears, b, aecordingto thenumberot'clamping-screws used, cast in the angle ot' the projecting-flange F and the rim h, as shown in Fig. 1. The edge of the flange is cut away between the ears I), leaving a shoulder, c, Fig. 1, each side of the bolt, and also at c, between it and the body ot' the heater.
The bolts may be made of malleable iron, and the heads shaped to iit the shoulders, whereby thex'pivot. isrentirely relieved from stra-in, which would otherwise come upon it. The bolts are hinged to th ese `ears by thepivots n, which prevent themfrom becoming detached from the heater when the head is unclamped and removed. The outer or upper face of the head H is beveled inward, as shown at c in Fig. 1, which prevents the nuts from slipping outward while being screwed down or when the pressure arises within the heater when in use. There are three clamping-bolts used in the heater represented in the drawings in Fig. 1. When the head H is to be removed, the nuts N are turned once or twice around, which is sufficient to relieve them, and the bolts B are each swung out, as indicated by the dotted lines D, in which position they are held bythe shoulder rresting against the rim h. The distance between the clamping-bolts may be unequally spaced, or the head may be otherwise marked, in order that it may be so placed that the same points of the follower and packing shall register to each other as before it was removed. This avoids the necessity of repacking every time the heater is charged or used, because if any portieri ofthe packing adheres to the follower it is returned to the place it left, and consequently always remains of equal thickness at all points.
The thermometer is attached to the screw G, and the head H is provided with a proper fusible plug, as ordinarily used for this purpose.
It is well understood by dentists that convenience and safety, which are combined in these heaters, is very desirable in their manipulation, either in filling or removing their contents.
What l claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
Two or more clampingbolts, B, in combination with the head and boiler of dentists vulcanizing heaters, said bolts being constructed, arranged, and operating substantially in the manner and forthe purposes herein shown and described.
D. J. PEER.
