IMPROVEMENT IN MACHINE FDR BENDING GIRGLES.
fdtlgttlgthirlc munt in iii tlgcst tettets atent :ma uniting gaat ,at ila aina.
vTO ALL WIIOM IT MAY CONGERN:
Be it known that I, WILLIAM BOYD, of Hartford, in the county o'f Washington, and State of New York, have inventeda new and useful Improvement in Machines for BendingCarriageircles; and I dohereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, which will enable others skilled inthe art to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming part of' this speciication, in which- Figure 1 is a top view of my invention. -Figure 2 is a section ofthe same, through the line :v x of g. 1. Similar letters of refcrcnceindicatc like parts. The object of this invention is to perform the bending of the irons generally known as carriage-circles, or fifth-wheels'. It consists ofthe devices set -forth in the following: i Y l In the drawngs,.tl1e circular table A is formed. with asno-cession of circularfaces, c a a, the., 4dccreasin in diameter from the bottom upward, by which arrangement several different-sized circles can be formed'.' the same machine.
The bending is accomplished by means of the wheels I-I and I, the planes of which are. at right angles cach other.- i,
The lwheel IAis grooved, and is for the purpose of holding the' rod N, being bent into a circle, ldown upc the horizontal part of one of the circular faces.
The zvhecl II is'for the purpose of' bending,` the rod around andagainst the vertical part of` the-:circular face which is next adjacent. These wheelsare borne around the table A, and thus complete the formation of the fth-wheel or circle.
The wheel II revolves in the standard G, the upper end of which latter is clamped lirrnly te the lever B, by means of nuts ij, which work on a screw-thread cut in the standard, G. I
The wheel I works within a yoke7 J, which is pivoted to a.A standard, O, having nuts n. These standards are held within the slot Z, in the lever B, and are adjustable to or from the table, as will be obvious.-
"lhe lever is composed ofthe two parts, Band E, hinged together at D, for the purpose of raising the wheels to getthe rod or bar under them. Y
rlhis hinge-joint is stiiened by the plate o, held under the straps ga. The lever turns in the shaft r, which is alxed tothe part E by a nut,f, and the said shaft passes down through the bellow upright, K, cast on or affixed te the table A.
A nut, e, serves to hold the shaft in place,v The counter-wheel L, working in the yokestandard, M, which latter is alixed to the part E, by nuts g and z, rolls upon the plane of the table, side of the shaft frein tho other wheels, serves to'kcep them firmly in Contact with the rod or bar being bent.
- Set-screws Z) 'Zn working in a plate, d, serve to hold the end of the said red or bar.
the bottom circle or ifth-wheel, and which'clip is formed before the rod is bent to formthe circle. C is thc'lever-handle. The manner of bending the bar is shown at g. 1. Having thus described my invention, I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent- Lhe wheels H I Ii, table A, and jointed lever C B Reet-screws I; 6, and circular faces a t a, all constructed'and operating substantiallyas and for thepurpose shownand described.
