Description

'each side,
'llntrd tatrc J, n. PRESTON; OF'JEFFERSON CITY, MISSOURI.
Leners Patent N0.j95,o42, dated september 21,` 1869.
wm IMPROVEMENT IN MACHINE Fon BENDING woon.
The Schedule referredto in these Letters Patent and making part f the same.
. To all whom it may concern e'it known that I, J. PRESTON, of Jefferson City, in the county of Gole, and State of Missouri, have invented a new and improved Haines-Bending Machine; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof', which will enable others skilled in the alt to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawing, formingpart of this specification.
. This invention relates to `a new and improved Inachiue for bending wooden harnes, whereby thatoperation is greatlyfacilitated, and consists in tbe coustruction, arrangement, and combination of parts, as"
hereinafter described.
In' the accompanying sheet of drawing- Figure 1 represents a vertical longitudinal section oi' the'maehine through the line :c :c of iig. 2.
. Figure 2 is a top or'pla-n ,view.
Similarletters of reference indicate corresponding parts. A repr sents the platform or bed ofthe machine. B is a lock, which is fast on the bedA, and supports the bending-lever.
C is the bending-lever, which is formed of iron and wood combined, but maybe inade'entirely of iron.
D lis the handle or outer end of the leverQ, which is clamped by bolts between two iron straps, marked y The lever is a fork, which encloses the block B on to which they' are attached by a pivotbolt, F.
In the forkthus formed there is a flanged roller, G, which bears upon the `strapand haines when the'lever is raised, as seen in tig'. 1, for bending.
H iS the form or mould, on which the haines is bent.
`It restsfon the' block B, as seen in the drawing,'anf l is connected therewith by means of the an gie guide-irons I I, which are attached' to the bed 'A by bolts, so that blockv B, form H, adjustable theyare adjustable in two directions, for accommoting hames of diiierent sizes'and shapes. The slots which allow of this adjustment are seen in the drawing, iig: 2.
lhe lever C is also made adjustable on the block B, so asto admit larger or smaller timber.
J represents the hames. K is an iron strap, which is attached to the form H at one end, and rests upon the back of thehames,
when the latter ifs being bent. This strapprevents any fracture in the grain of the wood, as it is pressed tightly thereto by the roller, at the points of greatest danger.
L is a clamp and M is a key, by which the haines is brought down to the form H, as seen' in the drawing. The back end of the llames is 'brought down and held by means of the band N and the'lever 0.
The band is connected with the lever by a rod, P, which works in a slot in the bed A, as seen in fig. 1. R is a ratchet-bar, for holding the lever O inrposition.
With this machine, haines may be bent without danger of fracturing the grain of the wood, and with the greatest dispatch.
Having thus described my invention,
What I claim as new, and desire to secure byLetters Patent, is-
The combination, with the foundation A; of the angle-irons I, bendinglever C, flanged roller G, `adjlisting-straps E, band N, rod P, lever 0,1ack-bar R, key M, and clamp L, when .constructed andai-ran ged substantially as herein shown and described, for the purpose specified.
J. H. PRESTON.
