Description

N- PETERS. PHOTCFLITHOGHPNER, WASHINGTON D C @wat @imite ROBERT B. TAYLOR, OF
WISCONSIN.
PENSAUKIE,
Letters Patent N 98,123, dated December 21, 1869.
IMPROVEMENT IN SHING-LE-PACKER.
The Schedule referred to in these Letters Patent.' and making part: of the same.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I. ROBERT B. TAYLOR, of West Pensauhie, 1n Lne county Ot' Ooonto, and tate of Wisconsin, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Shingle-Packer; and I (lo-hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, which will enable others skilled in the-art to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification.
- This invention relates to improvements inapparatus for pressing and holdingr the bunches of shingles for binding them, and consists ofthe arrangement, ou a suitable bench having end walls for gauging the piling of theshinglcs at the thick ends, of a pair of vertically-slidingbars, a transverse pressing-bar, and a set of gear-wheels, shaft, and hand-lever, the said wheels gearing. with the vertically-sliding bars, which are toothed for the purpose, in such a way that the hand-lever may be used to force the transverse bnrs, which are connected to the upper ends of the sliding bar, down upon the bundle of shingles across the eentre, pressing and holding the bundle till fastened.
Figure 1 is a side elevation of' my improved machine, and
Figure 2 is a transverse section 0f the same.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts.
A is the table.
B and C, the endivvalls for gauging the outer ends of the shingles, the thin ends of which are lapped tween the said end-guards.
rIhe wall (l is hinged to the table, sol as to be turned down to deliver the finished bundles.
E E are vertically-sliding bars, rising up through v,the side-beams of the Iranie, and providedwith gearteeth below, for being worked up and downI by pinions vF, on a shaft, G, having a. handle for turning it.
These bars are slotted above the table, and have flanges I -projecting inward from the. upper ends, for the control of a transverse bar, Ii, the ends of which take nuclei' the said flanges.
.The shingles being piled in the machine, as' represented in the drawing, under the bar K, to the amount required fora full bundle, may be pressed down into the compact condition required by turning the handlever G, by which'great force may be applied. When so compressed, the fasteniugs may be applied in any preferred way. v
After fastening, the pressure is released, the wall C turned down, and the bundle discharged.
Having thus described myinvention,
I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters ROBERT B. TAYLOR.
