HENRY P. WATTS, or LYNIOHBURG, VIRGINIA, ASSIGNOR To HIMSELF AND JAMES A. OOOLEY.
Letters Patent No. 97,008, dated November 16, 1869.
IMPROVEMENT IN CORN-SHELLERS.
The Schedule referred to in these Letters Patent and making part; of the same.
To all whom it may concern 7 Be it. known that I, HENRY P. \VA'rrs, of Lynchburg, in the county of Campbell, and State of -Virwill enable others skilled in the art to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification, in which Figure 1 is a side view of my improved machine.
Figure 2 is a detail sectional view of the same, taken through the line :0 w, fig. 1. 1
Similar letters of reference indicate like parts.
M y invention has for its object to furnish an improved machine for removing corn from the cob, both when dry and when green, which machine shall be simple in construction, easily and conveniently operated, and effective in operation. 7
It consists in the construction and combination of the various parts, as hereinafter more fully described.
A is the standard of the machine, which is clamped to a bench, table, or other support by the hand-screw a, as shown in fig. 1.
The upper eml of the standard A has a dovetailed groove, or a socket formed in it, to receive the tangs b of the flanged rings 13. 1
The rings B are formed with inwardly-projecting flanges, b", upon the outer edges of their inner sides, and they aresecured to each other by bolts, 0, passing through the ears 1), formed upon their outer sides.
."Tl'ierings B, thus formed and secured to each other,
form a ,groove upon their inner sides, in which groove 4 is placed a flat ring, D.
Upon the inner side of the ring D are formed, or to it are attached two guide-bars, E, in such positions as to-be directly opposite to and parallel with each other,
as shown in fig. 1.
F are two semi-cylindrical or curved jaws, theends of which are-elongated, and slotted or notched, to fit and slide upon the parallel guide-bars E, as shown. in figs. 1 and 2, and which are kept from passing the centre ofthe ring D by the small stops or projections 0, attached to the centres of the faces of the said bars E.
The faces of the jaws F have spiral flanges or threads formed upon them, which, as the ring I) and j aws F are revolved, feed the ear forward through the machine.
The middle partof the outer or convex sides of the jaws F have small projections or pins formed upon them, which enter sockets or recesses formed in the inner sides of the bars or names G, to receivethem, as shown in 1.
The cnds'of the bars or frames G are grooved, to fit and slide upon the parallel bars E, and the said bars or frames G are held forward against the jaws F by the coiled or equivalent springs Hz, the inner ends of which rest against the middle of the convex sides of the jaws F, and the outer ends of which rest against the ring I), where they are kept in place by short pins or projections upon said ring and jaws, as showuin fi 1.
This construction allows the jaws F to give, to adjust themselves to the difl'e'rent sizes of the ears to be 011- eratcd upon, and at the same time clamps the car with sutllcient force to carry it forward through the machine.
I is a knife, or cutter, attached to a projecting part of the edge of one of the jaws F, in such a position, that as the jaws turn upon the car of corn, the said knife or cuttcr may move spirally over the surface of the cob, removing the kernels of corn, \vhethcr the said corn may be dry or green.
J are cranks, attached to pins or bolts formed upon or attached to the ring D, and projmting upon both sides of the machine, as shown in fig. 2.
In using the machine, the ear is fed into the machine between the jaws F, upon that side upon which the knife I projects, aml is held by one hand while the: other hand operates the machine by means of the u'ank J, upon the other side of the machine.
When the car has passed about half way throughthcl machine, the hands are shifted, the hand that was operating the one crank taking hold'ot' the forward projecting pa'rt of the car, and the other hand taking hold of and o ')erat.ing the other crank.
Having thus described my invention,
1 claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters. Patent- The combination of the standard A, flanged outer rings B, inner revolving ring 1), parallel guide-bars E, jaws F, knife I, guide-flames G, spiral or equivalent springs H, and two cranks J, with each other, said parts being constructed and arranged substantially as herein shown and described, and for the purposes set forth.
