UNITED STAT S PATENT OFFICE.
TILLMAN LEWIS OOLBORN, OF BASEI-IOR, KANSAS.
BOOK-MARK.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent N 0. 673,534, dated- May '7, 1901.
' Application filed April 4, 1900. Serial No. 11,435. (No model.)
full, clear, and exact description of the in-' vention, such as will enableothers skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
The object of my invention is to lessen the labor of hotel-clerks and parties in charge of other large registers for the entry of names of patrons, &c., and as a means of attaining this object I have devised an attachment for registers, which attachment will indicate the line upon which each succeeding name is to be written, the attachment to be under the control of the party in charge of the register.
In the drawings forming a portion of this specification, and in which like letters of reference indicate similar parts in the several views, Figure 1 is a perspective 'viewof a register to which my invention is applied. Fig. 2 is a perspective view of my invention detached. Fig. 3 is a longitudinal section of the attachment when in position.
In the manufacture of a device in accordance with my invention I provide a base a, having clamps b and c secured thereto, the former at one end of the base and the latter at a slight distance from the opposite end. The clamp b is secured in a fixed position to the base a and comprises a spring-clip which projects from a fiat portion which is fastened to the base a. The clamp c is also a spring-clip projecting from a flat portion, and the flat portion is slotted to receive a setscrew seated in a threaded perforation in the base. By turning this screw the clamp 0 may .be held in a fixed position or adjusted longitudinally of the base a. To the end of the base (t, adjacent the clamp c, is secured a plate cl through the medium of a spring-hinge e, the spring of which will tend to hold the plate d parallel with the base a.
Pivoted to the free edge of the plate d is an arm 9, comprising two members pivoted together, which may be made in the shape of a human arm and hand, the index-finger of the latter being extended.
.of the register.
In the use of my invention it is to be secured to the rear cover of a register or similar volume by means of the clamps b and c, the clamp 0 being snugly adjusted to engage the cover at its upper edge. When the attachment has thus been put in place, the plate d is raised on its spring-hinge and the register is opened to the desired page. When this has been done, the plate (1 is allowed to fall upon the pages of the register, carrying with it the arm g, which latter is adjusted by means of its central pivot until the indexfinger of the hand falls upon the desired line Upon the index-finger of the hand may be placed the words Sign here. As the names are placed in the register the arm is moved by the attendant to indicate the line upon which the next name is to be written. I
The simplicity and utility of my invention may be readily appreciated from the foregoing description, and it is readily understood that I mayconstruct the attachment ofany desired material or any desired shape. Instead of the arm being made of two members three or more may be employed.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim is- 1. A device of the class described comprising a base having means for attachment to a book said means comprising clamps, one of which is longitudinallyadjustable upon the base, a spring-hinge attached to one end of the base, a plate attached to the spring-hinge adapted to lie normally parallel with the base and a jointed arm attached to the plate.
2. A device of the class described, comprising a base, a spring-clamp secured to one end of the base, a second spring-clamp adj us tably secured to the other end of the base, said clamp comprising a flat portion having a longitudinal slot to receive a set-screw passed into the base and a spring -clip attached thereto, a spring-pressed plate secured to the base and a jointed arm secured to the springpressed plate havingan indicator.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in the presence of two witnesses.
