l*PATENT OFFICE.
MALVIN Licnrnaor New YORK, N. Y.
CALENDAR.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 700,059, dated May 13, 1902.
Application led November 27, 1901.y Serial No. 83,839. (No model.)
2"'0 @ZZ whom t may concern:
Beitknown that I, MALVIN LIGHTER, a subject of the Emperorof Germany, residing in the city of New York, borough of Manhattan,
and parts and combinations of thevsame, asr
will be fully described hereinafter and then pointed out in the claims.
A practical embodiment ot my invention is represented in the accompanying drawings,t forming a part 'of this specification, in which.. similar characters of reference indicate corresponding parts in both the figures.
Figure lis a front elevation of the improvement, and Fig. 2 is a transverse section of the' same on the line 2 2 of Fig. l.
The display device shown in the drawings is in the form of a vperpetual calendar, andv consists, essentially, ot' a plate A, having pairs of parallel slots and B B and strips C C extended at their ends through said slots, so that a portion of each strip isgdsplayed on the front o f theplate between the slots ofon pair, as is plainly shown in Fig. 1. j
The strips C C are of flexible material, such as sheet-Celluloid, and are treated to curl or roll up, so that when a strip is unrolled and its ends are passed through a pair of slots said ends immediately curl or roll up on the back of the plate toward each other to draw the front portion of the sheet taut on the front of the plate.
When it is desired to shift the displayed portion, it is only necessary for the operator to take hold and pull on one of the curled ends of the respective sheet to draw the latter in one direction until the desired new matother end of the sheet correspondingly uncurling or unwinding on the back of the plate.
ter is displayed at the front of the plate,
As soon as the sheet has been adjusted and face with matter to be displayed-such, forA instance, .as shown in Fig. l., in which the strip C contains the days of the month arranged in columnsto form a perpetual calendar in connection with the initials of the week-daysappearing on the plate A, directly above the strip C, with the initials standing over corresponding columns on the strip C.
The slots B areplaced so far apart that all the days of a single month only appear on the front of the plate. The strip C' contains the names ofthe months in regular order, and the slots B' B are spaced apart, so that the name'of one month appears at a time on the face of the plate A. The pairs of slots B B and B' Bare arranged at right angles to each other, so that the strip C is adjustable AYsidewise on the'plate A and the strip C is adjustable up and down.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patentl. A display device of the class described, comprising a plate having a pair of parallel slots, and a display-strip for engagement with the slots and extending at its ends through the slots to display a portion of the strip at the front of the plate between the slots, said display-strip being iexible and having its ends free and curled up at the back of the rplate adjacent to the slots to hold the strip iny position, as set forth.
2. A display device of the class described, comprising a plate havingga pair of V'parallel slots, and a display-strip for en gagemet with the slotsand extending at its end through the slots to display a portion of the strip at the front of the plate between the slots, said display-strip being exible and having its IOO ends free and curled up at the back of the plate adjacent to the slots, the curled free ends extending toward each other to exert pressure in opposite directions on the displayed portion, to draw the saine taut on the front face of the plate, as set forth.
3. A display device of the class described, comprising a plate having pairs of parallel slots, the pairs standing at angles to each other, and a display-strip for each pair of slots, extending,r at its ends through the slots to display a portion of the strip at the front of the plate between the slots, each of the display-Strips` being flexible and havingits ends free and curled up at the back of the plate adjacent to the slots, the curled free ends extending toward each other to exert pressure in opposite directions on the disnaine to this specification in the presence of 3o two subscribing,` witnesses.
